Huch, mein Blog hab ich sträflich vernachlässigt und inzwischen sieht die Oberfläche ganz anders aus bei Blogger/Google. Naja, egal.

Eben lief die erste Ausgabe von Thomas Gottschalks neuer Sendung Gottschalk Live im Ersten.Hier einige Gedanken dazu:

Am Anfang machte Gottschalk den Erklärbär. Muss wohl so sein. Aber so ganz den Durchblick, was Social Media ist, hat er wohl noch nicht. Ich hatte auch gedacht, dass er vielleicht selber einen Computer am Schreibtisch stehen haben würde, um live zu verfolgen, was über die Sendung geschrieben wird. Oder besprechen die das dann morgen nach oder wie?

Die Social Media Schnecke Caro ist ja ein fleischgewordenes Klischee. Jung, hübsch, blond, naja. Sagen durfte sie noch nicht viel, oder? Nur bewundernd zu ihm hochschauen von ihrem Schreibtischstuhl aus. Wenn sie nicht auf dem Mund gefallen ist, sollte man sie (oder wechselnde Redaktionsmitglieder) vielleicht an einem weiteren Tisch mit in den Hauptraum setzen. Als Stichwortgeber so wie Manuel Andrack früher mit Harald Schmidt. Das wäre auf jeden Fall besser als so, wo die Redaktion nur im Hintergrund mal kurz lacht.

Apropos "Hauptraum", das Wohnzimmer und der Redaktionsraum sehen gut aus. Wenn die Redaktion den ganzen Tag dort sitzen darf, bin ich neidisch.

Braucht die Sendung Gäste? Bei der Kürze der Zeit? Und wenn eh andauernd eine Werbeunterbrechung kommt, noch dazu mit langem Musik-Intro? Dadurch macht man den "Flow" kaputt oder ein mögliches Gespräch. Außerdem hört Gottschalk sich zu gerne selber reden. Bei Wetten, dass ... ging das, da war Zeit, er konnte überziehen, aber hier, oh Mann. Er muss weniger von sich reden, besser zuhören und sich noch besser vorbereiten. Schuh des Manitu ins Jahr 1982 zu verfrachten, böser Faux Pax.

Oder sie sollen es durchziehen, dass nur er redet, dann aber ohne Gäste. Ich dachte eh, es ginge mehr um tagesaktuelle Themen. Okay, Heidi Klums Trennung wurde angesprochen, das ging. Die Geschichte über den angeblichen Verwandten aus der Zeitung war irgendwie sinnlos. Vielleicht lieber mehr Kuriositäten aus dem Internet zeigen? Da wird sich doch was finden. Und auf jeden Fall die "User", wie er so schon gesagt hat, mehr einbeziehen.

Und bitte auf keinen Fall am Ende um Zuschauer betteln, Herr Gottschalk. Das ist unter Ihrer Würde.

Zuschauer beleidigen ist auch super - wie mich mit einer Aussage zu Heidi Klums Entdeckung bei seiner damaligen Late Night Show: "Wer sich daran erinnert, muss schon etwas älter sein". Hey, 36 ist nicht alt!!

Und zu unterstellen, dass nur dumme Teenies ins Kino gehen und anspruchsvolle Filme null Zuschauererfolg haben, ist auch typisch Gottschalk. Hach.

So, jetzt muss ich den H&M Check schauen.

Another update on me

It has been decided - because I want to be with my boyfriend all week and not just on the weekends, I'll have to quit my job.

I'm now starting to look for jobs where he lives. First I have to finish writing my own job evaluation or whatever you call that.

I have mixed feelings about it all - it was my own decision, but it's a big step.

I like making lists, so let's see:

Pros about where I live and work now:
- interesting job (sort of in the media, has to do with music etc.)
- casual atmosphere at work
- beautiful city with good infrastructure, cultural events, good for shopping etc.
- close to my parents and sister

Negative things about current situation:
- job annoys me at times
- noise outside my apartment is getting worse and worse
- apartment is too small for 2 people on the weekends
- you can't find a parking space easily close to my apartment
- and most of all, of course, boyfriend is not here
- real estate prices are incredibly high (if we wanted a bigger place)

Pros about moving
- I'll be with my boyfriend
- I don't have many friends here that I would miss
- my boyfriend's friends are nice
- he has a big apartment and something even bigger is also affordable
- not having to drive on the motorway so often (which still scares me although I should be used to it by now)

Negative things about moving:
- having to deal with the whole moving out stuff (moving furniture, packing everything into boxes etc.)
- job search and getting used to new situation
- more snow / longer winters
- not the coolest town, but 2 good places not too far away, and this place here not that far away really either
- new job might be less interesting ... but we'll see

Ha. So do the good things outweigh the bad?? I hope so cos the negative things are mostly temporary.

Was gibt's neues?

Teneriffa-Urlaub war super.

Ich bin jetzt ziemlich besessen von Google+ (bzw. finde es gerade interessanter als Twitter, weil es neu ist) und von meinem Smartphone sowieso.

Es stehen evtl. Veränderungen an - Umzug, Jobwechsel, mal sehen. Alles noch nicht so ganz klar.

Rock im Park 2011

Ich hab noch gar nix zum diesjährigen Rock im Park Festival gepostet.
Wir waren Freitag und Samstag vor Ort. Freitag so ca. ab 16 Uhr bei der Center Stage, wo wir bei super Sommerwetter Hurts, The Kooks, Söhne Mannheims und Coldplay gesehen haben.

Am Samstag war das Wetter etwas unbeständig, also sind wir später hingefahren als geplant. Gesehen haben wir einen Teil von Volbeat auf der Center Stage und Simple Plan auf der Alternastage.

Mehr folgt noch, wollte nur kurz was testen (was aber nicht ging, so'n Mist)

TV update - I've had enough of bloody shows

I've just updated my "current TV faves" box on the right side.

True Blood and Dexter have disappeared from it, although they are still airing here in Germany. I just couldn't take them anymore. I guess the fact that I find the opening credits of both shows disgusting should have given me a clue that the shows wouldn't be quite my cup of tea.

I'm not a big fan of vampires (as I've said before), but I liked the novel True Blood is based on (or rather, the first part of the series of books). The first season was good, at least parts of it, but since the storylines with the crazy lady Maryann and the girl Bill was forced to "create", I don't really like it very much anymore. I also don't like that Bill bites Sookie when they have sex. To see their relationship develop in the first season was more interesting (or romantic, I guess).

I also found it very hard to watch when LaFayette and others were held captive (in chains) in the basement of Fangtasia. Or being ripped to pieces by the blonde vampire (who I don't find half as hot as everybody else, it seems).

Then I missed one episode by accident (I taped it, but there was no repeat later at night as the weeks before). I could have watched it online from some site that offers streams, but as it wasn't fun anymore to watch it at all, I stopped.

With Dexter it was similar. Part of the problem there was that I seem to have missed half of season 2 - at least I couldn't remember big parts of the recap shown at the beginning of the season 3 premiere. So I watched the first 2 or 3 eps, but then I lost interest. I think there was a particular scene or storyline that killed it for me, but I can't remember what it was now. Rita being pregnant? Don't know. Also, the show is on very late so I always have to tape it and I sometimes forgot it so I decided to stop watching altogether. I still think it's not a bad show. Just a lot of blood and guts and torture.

Instead, I watch Royal Pains now. It started airing 5 weeks ago and I enjoy it. I've always liked Mark Feuerstein ever since he was a guest star in Once And Again. And the Hamptons are definitely beautiful to look at. So I guess I prefer medical dramedy or whatever you want to call it to dark, violent, bloody vampire/serial killer dramas.

Goodbye, Zynga (for the most part)

I think I've managed to beat my games addiction. I'd posted before (in German) about the Zynga games I play on Facebook - Farmville, Cafe World etc. A couple of weeks ago I quit FrontierVille and now also CityVille. The reasons are the same - too many quests and tasks for which too many neighbors are needed. Some of my friends play, too, and I even added some people I don't even know. But I don't want to drag anybody into it who doesn't want to play. And it looks kinda stupid if your whole Facebook wall consists only of game postings, right?

Apart from the pressure to do what the game tells you to do in a given timeframe (sometimes when there are timed quests), playing these games got so time-consuming that it was just too much. Okay, you can click on things when you're on the phone, but it's rude not to give the person you're talking to your full attention.

I must say that in the beginning I liked the quests because they gave the gameplay more purpose, but when it's stuff like "harvest 1000 peanuts" and 1 peanut takes 4 days and you only have so much space on your homestead ... Or you have quests which you can never solve without more neighbours so they stayed there forever ... it was just too annoying.

So now I only play TreasureIsle and ignore the quests there. I'm also trying out some "casual games" like Mahjong or Bejeweled Blitz or Diamond Dash or whatever they are called. But I'm done with the real addiction and I'm glad.

Oh, and I completely blocked the game apps so I don't see postings from former neighbors or game requests. First I tried to not do that so people who still need me as a neighbor could still go to my farm and tend stuff or whatever, but the game requests were too annoying.

Ha. I have a feeling that post isn't very well-structured. Sorry.

True Blood TV-Start heute

Heute startet in Deutschland True Blood, eine "Vampirserie für Erwachsene", wie ich es mal nennen möchte. Also eher nix für Teenies, die auf die Twilight Romane und Filme stehen. Als ich von der Serie gehört habe, hab ich mir den ersten Roman der Buchreihe gekauft, auf dem die Fernsehserie basiert: Dead until Dark - a Sookie Stackhouse novel von Charlaine Harris. Hat mir gut gefallen.

Dann habe ich mir ein paar Folgen der Serie im Original angesehen. Diese Serie von "Six Feet Under"-Macher Alan Ball ist viel düsterer als das Buch. Den Vorspann finde ich geradezu verstörend. Der starke Südstaatenakzent der Figuren war für mich teilweise schwer verständlich. Aber die beiden Hauptdarsteller Anna Paquin und Stephen Moyer bzw. ihre Figuren sind sympathisch und die Handlung ist interessant und spannend. An mehr erinnere ich mich im Moment ehrlich gesagt nicht - ist schon ca. 1 Jahr her. Bin aber auf jeden Fall gespannt, wie das Ganze auf Deutsch ist und wer die Synchronstimmen sind. Das könnte ich sicher vorab schon rausfinden, aber ich lass mich lieber überraschen bzw. versuche dann während des Schauens die Sprecher zu erkennen.

Ausstrahlungstermin: ab heute ca. 22 Uhr auf RTL 2 in Doppelfolgen, Wdh. später in der Nacht.

Und jetzt überlege ich, ob ich zu der Serie nicht schon mal was geschrieben hab hier im Blog. Hm. Muss ich dann mal nachsehen.

Verschollene Klamotten

Kennt ihr das? Ihr sucht ein Kleidungsstück und könnt es partout nicht finden in den Tiefen des Schranks.

Zur Zeit vermisse ich
- ein hellblaues T-Shirt mit Polokragen
- eine schwarze Strickjacke
- eine olivgrüne Hose

Ich mein, ich versteh ja, wenn T-Shirts ineinander rutschen, aber eine Hose ist ja doch etwas größer. Sehr mysteriös.

Ein Phänomen, das es bei mir auch gibt, ist, dass ich den Besitz bzw. die Existenz bestimmter Kleidungsstücke komplett vergesse und nach langer Zeit erst durch Zufall wieder drauf stoße. Vollkommen blöd, vor allem, wenn die Sachen schön sind und gut passen. Aber so ist das manchmal mit mir : )

The Mentalist season 3 premiere

The first ep of season 3 of The Mentalist aired last Sunday on German TV. The show succeeds in maintaining a very high quality IMO. (In contrast to other shows where I found only the first seasons really good - such as The O.C., Lost, etc.)

What I enjoy is - of course - Simon Baker's charm as Patrick Jane and his bickering with female agent Lisbon. Yes, it's the same in almost all episodes, but it's done very well and doesn't feel repetitive to me.

The characters are all interesting, in fact. Cho's dry humour with his hilarious one-liners always make me laugh. His scenes with Rigsby are fun, too. And of course I love Rigsby and Van Pelt and am curious what will happen with them this season. (They were a couple for a short time in season 2, then their relationship was found out and Van Pelt decided to break it off instead of being transferred, I think.)

The murder cases are quite interesting most of the time, too. It's not too obvious who did it and the viewer can guess with the team.

The Red John thing from Jane's past is still a mystery to me and adds depth and sadness and all sorts of other characteristics to the character of Patrick Jane.

Blah. I've lost my point if I ever had one. Argh. Must edit this later.

Ich reg mich ja gar nicht auf ...

... wenn Leute innerorts konstant 40 km/h fahren.

... wenn Leute auf einer schnurgeraden Bundesstraße, wo 100 km/h erlaubt sind, höchstens 70 fahren.

... wenn Fahrradfahrer mitten auf der Fahrbahn fahren, selbst wenn es eine kleine Straße ist.

... wenn LKW an Steigungen Elefantenrennen machen - gehört echt gesetzlich verboten. Auch wenn es eine dreispurige Autobahn ist.

... wenn auf Facebook mal wieder angezeigt wird "your game state is out of sync, please refresh your browser" oder die Spiele gar nicht laden, obwohl der Flashplayer aktuell ist.

... wenn der Chef auf einmal zum Apple-Jünger wird und statt PowerPoint Keynote oder irgendwas web-/cloud-basiertes oder was weiß ich verwenden will.

Diese Liste wird sicher noch länger, sagt also nicht, ich hätte euch nicht gewarnt! ;-)

Ich hab die Haare schön - Ein kleiner "Erfahrungsbericht"

Nachdem ich in der Fernsehwerbung die Perfect Mousse von Schwarzkopf gesehen hatte und meine letzte Tönung schon ziemlich rausgewachsen war, war mal wieder Zeit für was Neues. Also hab ich mir den Farbton "Schokobraun" für knapp 7 Euro gekauft und am Sonntag ausprobiert.

Man muss die Farbe in den Entwickler schütten, das Fläschchen 1x auf den Kopf drehen und dann den Schaum aus dem Pumpflakon pumpen. Dann aufs trockene Haar auftragen. Ist ganz schön viel Schaum. Am Ende wusste ich schon nicht mehr, wohin damit (und meine Haare sind etwas länger als schulterlang). Lässt sich aber gut auftragen, es geht schon leichter zu verteilen als bei anderen Tönungen und tropft nicht. Halbe Stunde einwirken lassen, ausspülen, Conditioner drauf, nochmal auspülen, kämmen, fönen, fertig.

Das Ergebnis ist ziemlich gleichmäßig geworden, würde ich sagen. Der Farbton stimmt mit der Abbildung auf der Packung überein. (Meine Ausgangshaarfarbe war "mausbraun" mit Resten einer kastanienfarbenen Tönung.) Und schön glänzen tun die Haare danach (mit einem ganz leichten Rotstich) und fühlen sich sehr weich an, aber das ist bei anderen Tönungen auch so.

Geruch bemerkt man fast keinen, schon gar keinen unangenehmen.

Die Handschuhe passen mir bzw. sind fast zu groß, aber mein Freund meinte, für Transen wäre das nix : ) Für Männerhände sind die Handschuhe also recht eng, aber diese Tönung ist wohl eher für die weibliche Zielgruppe.

Zur Grauhaarabdeckung kann ich nix sage, da ich (noch) keine grauen Haare habe.

Ich kann die Perfect Mousse auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen, auch wenn sie mit 6,50 bis 7 Euro schon recht teuer ist. Schade, dass es keinen Farbton Kastanie gibt (soweit ich weiß), das wäre mir noch lieber gewesen also das dunklere Schokobraun.

Was ich mich im Laden noch gefragt habe: gibt es eigentlich keine auswaschbaren Tönungen mehr? Früher hatte ich da öfter eine, die nach 8 Wochen oder 15 Haarwäschen oder irgend sowas wieder verschwunden war. Jetzt hab ich sowas nicht gefunden, nur die permanenten, die rauswachsen. Komisch.

Wenn jetzt noch der Schnitt passen würde, wär's optimal. So lauf ich halt verstrubbelt rum. Muss wohl doch mal einen Friseur aufsuchen : )

Nachtrag zu Gowalla-Post

Mir ist noch was eingefallen: Und zwar gibt es doch außer "es macht Spaß" einen weiteren Grund, warum ich Gowalla und Foursquare nutze: Ich bin nämlich generell sehr interessiert an Technik-Themen, allerdings eher weniger an der Hardware, sondern Software, Desktop-Verschönerung und so Zeug. Als "early adopter" würde ich mich jetzt nicht bezeichnen, Beta-Tester bin ich sicher keiner, aber mein Interesse und Kenntnisstand geht angeblich über das des "Standard-PC-Benutzers" hinaus - v.a. für 'ne Frau, hab ich mir sagen lassen : ) Und inzwischen betrifft es hauptsächlich Online-/Internet-Sachen. Ihr dürft mich Nerdine nennen, wenn ihr mögt. Oder nee, das klingt zu sehr nach Nadine. Egal.

Ein paar Beispiele:
Ich hab schon den Opera Browser benutzt (so vor ca. 10 Jahren, würde ich sagen), als Tabbed Browsing noch kaum verbreitet war. Heute bevorzuge ich Chrome und hab immer noch 4 verschiedene Browser auf meinem Heim-PC.

Da ich Leuten kannte, die alle unterschiedliche Instant Messenger benutzten (AIM in USA, MSN in Skandinavien etc.), hab ich nach einer Lösung gesucht und Trillian gefunden, wo man sich in einem Programm bei mehreren Clients anmelden konnte. Auch das ist lange her - jetzt passiert Chat ja fast nur noch über Facebook, Google oder Skype oder eine Online-Variante von Trillian wie meebo (soweit ich weiß).

An den besagten Programmen gefiel mir auch, dass sie "skinnable" waren, d.h. man konnte über herunterladbare Skins/Themes ihr Aussehen verändern. Sowas gefiel mir damals sehr. ObjectDock ging auch in die Richtung, das war/ist eine Software, die unter Windows so ein Dock am Rand des Bildschirms anzeigt, wie man es von Macs kennt. Heute ändere ich nur noch ein- oder mehrmals pro Monat meinen Bildschirmhintergrund.

Aber jedenfalls bin ich schon ziemlich computersüchtig, würde ich mal sagen, und langsam verlagert sich das auch auf Smartphone und Apps.

Kleine Statistik

Ich hab mir eben mal die Seitenleiste meines Blogs angesehen und Folgendes festgestellt:

In 6 Jahren habe ich durchschnittlich 35 Beiträge pro Jahr gepostet.
Am produktivsten/"schreibwütigsten" war ich 2006 mit 70 Posts und am "stillsten"/faulsten letztes Jahr mit nur 14 Beiträgen - Schande über mich! : )

Was ich so über Gowalla und Co. denke

Dies ist eine Antwort auf einen Blogbeitrag von Konni, d.h. mein Senf zum Thema LBS (Location based services):

Als ich vor einigen Monaten ein Smartphone bekommen hab, hab ich mich bei Gowalla angemeldet. Ich hatte über Twitter und Mashable von diesen Diensten Wind bekommen. Im Vergleich zu Foursquare schien mir Gowalla rein optisch bunter, daher hab ich mich dafür entschieden.

Was ich damit mache: einchecken und Badges und Items sammeln. Wie Konni schon schreibt, ist es wie ein Spiel. Der Mehrwert ist für mich, dass ich vielleicht Orte entdecke, die ich noch nicht kannte, z.B. gibt es ganz bei mir in der Nähe ein griechisches Lokal, das von außen sehr unscheinbar ist. Daher dachte ich, es wäre geschlossen. Erst durch den Gowalla-Eintrag hab ich es mir genauer angesehen und festgestellt, dass es offen hat. Inzwischen war ich dort sogar schon zum Essen. So kann man also (s)eine Stadt/Gegend besser kennenlernen.

Selber neue Orte anlegen, finde ich auch gut, da man nicht nur selber Punkte bekommt, sondern eben auch die „Mitspieler“ von den Neueinträgen was haben, also entweder einfach dadurch, dass es den Ort jetzt gibt oder auch durch genauere Tips in Form von Kommentaren, z.B. wo es die beste Pizza gibt oder Ähnliches.

Was ich aus Angst vor Stalkern (auch wenn’s albern sein mag) nicht mache, ist allzu nah zu meiner Wohnung einchecken. Auch meine genaue Adresse habe ich nicht als mein „Headquarter“ oder wie auch immer man das nennen kann, angelegt. Ich checke auch nicht täglich im Büro ein, das fände ich albern. Manchmal checke ich auch erst beim Verlassen eines Ortes ein. Gar nicht paranoid, ich weiß. Wenn dann wirklich jemand in der Nähe wäre, wäre man selber schon weg, hehe.

Wozu man die Check-Ins noch nutzen könnte, wäre, dass man jemandem, der sich vielleicht Sorgen macht, ob man wo heil angekommen ist, auf diesem Weg Bescheid geben könnte. Gerade im Dezember bei dem Schneechaos war es ja nicht jeden Tag selbstverständlich, dass man gut von A nach B kommt. Dafür nutze ich Gowalla aber selten. Im konkreten Fall nutze ich hier eher Glympse oder Google Latitude.

Was die Interaktion mit anderen angeht, so kenne ich nur sehr wenige meiner Gowalla Kontakte persönlich. Einige von ihnen kenne ich durch Twitter – teilweise, weil sie in derselben Stadt sind wie ich, oder weil sie mir durch ihre Tweets sympathisch sind. Dass man mal einen anderen User an einem Ort trifft, ist mir noch nicht passiert. Dazu nutzen es wohl auch noch zu wenig Leute in Deutschland oder ich bin in einer zu kleinen Stadt oder hab einen zu kleinen Freundeskreis.

Ich poste meine Check-Ins üblicherweise auf Twitter. Das gehört irgendwie dazu, finde ich. Sie nur innerhalb des LBS zu lassen, fände ich irgendwie langweilig. Ja, ich habe wohl ein gewisses Mitteilungsbedürfnis, sonst würde ich auch kaum bloggen oder twittern, oder?

Check-ins auch auf Facebook teilen tue ich hingegen eigentlich nie, hauptsächlich weil meine Kollegen mich dann wahrscheinlich für verrückt halten würden (und die sind alle bei Facebook). Es ist so ähnlich wie mit Farmville und anderen Spielen. Wenn jemand fragt, was das Ziel dabei ist und warum ich es mache, kann ich das meist nur damit beantworten, dass es Spaß macht, es mir als Zeitvertreib gefällt und ich es irgendwie cool finde. Was noch mit reinspielt (Psychologie und so), betrifft eher die Spiele als LBS – dazu vielleicht andermal mehr.

Wenn es eine Art von Belohnung gäbe von lokalen Geschäften für's Einchecken, z.B. in Form von Gutscheinen oder Gratis-Drinks oder so, fände ich das cool, es ist aber für mich kein Muss - mir macht Gowalla auch so Spaß. Angeblich soll die Restaurant-Kette Vapiano in Deutschland sowas planen. Bei denen versteh ich allerdings nicht mal ihr Geschäftskonzept, wie ich neulich festgestellt habe.

Was ich jetzt geschrieben habe, betrifft LBS allgemein, würde ich mal sagen. Foursquare nutze ich erst seit kurzem. Ich hab mich dort eigentlich nur registriert, weil man bald mit Gowalla auch bei Foursquare einchecken kann. Geht wohl schon mit der iPhone App, aber nicht mit Android, wenn ich mich nicht täusche.

Äh, ja. Den Sinn von Gowalla sehe ich also ähnlich wie Konni, auch wenn ich nicht ganz so vorsichtig bin wie er.

Gute Vorsätze für 2011

Frohes neues Jahr wünsche ich noch nachträglich!

Habe ein paar gute Vorsätze. Mal sehen, ob ich sie umsetzen kann ...

- Abnehmen. Nix Extremes, aber so 2-5 Kilo wären gut. Hosen kneifen. Nicht schön. Sollte auch mehr bzw. überhaupt mal Sport machen. Hm.

- Wieder mehr Bücher lesen. Früher hab ich morgens in der Küche beim Müsli essen gelesen. Jetzt sitze ich meist im Wohnzimmer und schalte kurz den Fernseher an. Und sonst sitze ich viel am PC und lese Artikel im Internet. So komme ich mit dem Stapel an ungelesenen Romanen natürlich nicht voran. Im Sommerurlaub hab ich 3 Bücher angefangen, aber die hab ich dann hinterher auch nicht weiter gelesen.

- Mehr trinken. Also Wasser, Tee oder Säfte. Keinen Alkohol. : ) Obwohl mein Konsum da eh extrem niedrig ist. Ich schaff' nicht mal ein Glas Wein zum Essen.

- Öfter bloggen. Und evtl. zu Wordpress umziehen. Mal sehen.

- Ordentlicher werden. Jaja, träum weiter. Seufz. Mir fehlt definitiv die Selbstdisziplin.

- Öfter zum Arzt gehen und insgesamt Sachen nicht vor mir herschieben.

Toll, jetzt hab ich mich selber niedergemacht, oder? Mist.

Meine Lieblinge des Jahres

Das Jahr neigt sich dem Ende zu, jaja, und überall gibt's Jahresrückblicke und Best-Of Listen. Hier kommt mein Senf dazu:

Filme:
1. Inception - visuell sehr cool und mit einer interessanten, vertrackten Handlung.
2. The Social Network - super für Internet-Süchtige wie mich : ) War sehr positiv überrascht von Justin Timberlake.

Tja, damit ist die Liste der Filme, die ich erwähnen möchte, auch schon wieder zu Ende. Länger wäre die derjenigen, die ich sehen wollte, aber verpasst hab, z.B. The Town oder Despicable Me / Ich - einfach unverbesserlich.

TV/Serien:
1. Castle - Krimikomödie mit super Ensemble und witzigen Dialogen.
2. Lie to Me - Tim Roth und sein trockener Humor sind toll und die Fälle sind meistens interessant.
3. The Mentalist - ich schau nur noch Krimis, oder? Die Serie hält die Balance zwischen leicht und schwermütig dank des wunderbaren Hauptdarstellers Simon Baker.
4. Mad Men - juhu, kein Krimi! Sondern ein Sittenbild der 60er Jahre. Tolle Ausstattung und langsames Erzähltempo, aber trotzdem nie langweilig.

Musik/Lieblingssänger/-bands:
1. Pink - konstante Qualität, jede Single ein Hit, und ich mag ihren rotzigen Stil.
2. Milow - eigentlich war ja 2009 sein Jahr, aber ich hab ihn erst dieses Jahr live gesehen, fand ihn super und freue mich auf das neue Album.
3. Mumford & Sons - zuerst gehört auf Absolute Radio, haben ihren eigenen unverkennbaren Stil und gefallen mir super.

Dabei belasse ich es jetzt mal - die ganze Dance-Schwemme ignorier ich getrost, obwohl mir da schon auch einige Songs gefallen. Aber so richtig mein Ding ist das nicht.

My fave Android apps

I've been using an Android smartphone for a while (the HTC Hero) and these are some of the apps I have on it. All of them are free.

For music:
SoundHound and Shazam - both recognize the song if you hold the phone in front of a speaker. Doesn't always work, for example if it's background music in a TV show and the dialogue is too loud, but sometimes.

TuneIn Radio - a great radio app - very fast and stable. Must check if you can mark certain stations as favourites.

iAmp - the streaming app from Absolute Radio. I guess it's somewhere in TuneIn Radio too, but I can't find it so it's easier to listen this way.

Games:
Angry Birds - of course! Millions of downloads since it was released for Android recently. First the graphics didn't work on the HTC Hero. Rovio released an update, it's better now, but still a bit slow. And I'm not good at hitting the evil pigs with the cute birds. But it's a great game.

Jewels - like Bejeweled Blitz or similar "match 3" games where you have to put 3 gems of the same colour in a line of 3 or more.

Copycat Lite - can't explain it. It's like that 80s toy/game Senso or whatever it was called. You have to repeat a sequence of sounds by tapping coloured buttons or something like that.

Communities / "Check-in-networks":
Gowalla - location based service like Foursquare etc. You can check into places, leave comments or take photos to earn badges. I think it's fun. If I was paranoid, I'd have to be afraid of stalkers, I guess : )

Miso: with this you can check in to the TV shows and movies you are watching and find other people who like the same stuff. Not many German speaking users or shows yet, but we're making progress : ) As with Gowalla, you can get badges.

Männer-Witze

Einen Tag zu spät (weil ja gestern Welt-Männer-Tag war), aber ich fand's so witzig, dass ich es posten muss.

Eine kleine graue Zelle kommt zufällig in das Gehirn eines Mannes. Alles ist dunkel, leer und ohne Leben.
"Huhuuu", ruft die Zelle. Keine Antwort. Sie ruft ein zweites Mal: "Huhuuu, ist hier denn niemand?"
Wieder bleibt alles ruhig. Da erscheint plötzlich eine andere graue Zelle und fragt: "Hey, was machst du denn hier oben? Komm doch mit, wir sind alle unten."

... und 'ne ziemlich schlimme: ich bin von Facebook-Spielen besessen. Früher waren es Fernsehserien, von denen ich in kurzer Zeit viele Folgen konsumiert habe (Gilmore Girls, Gossip Girl, Prison Break, kurzzeitig auch Castle und Glee, usw.). Dazu hab ich intensiv im Web nach Infos und Fotos zu bestimmten Schauspielern gesucht, , Diskussionsforen verfolgt oder fanfic gelesen.

Aber seit einiger Zeit ist mein Interesse an Fernsehserien und dem Drumherum zurückgegangen und wurde durch Facebook- bzw. Spiele-Sucht ersetzt. Es fing an mit Farmville - ich weiß gar nicht mehr, wie ich dazu gekommen bin. Wahrscheinlich hab ich aus Neugier oder Unwissen auf ein Posting in meinem Newsfeed geklickt oder eine Anfrage geöffnet. Dann hab ich 'ne Zeitlang ZooWorld gespielt, was ich aber wieder aufgehört habe, weil kaum einer meiner Freunde mitspielte und es an einer Stelle irgendwie nicht voran ging. Dafür hab ich fremde Leute (Freundesfreunde, Twitterer) hinzugefügt und spiele jetzt auch die anderen Zynga (so heißt die Firma dahinter) Spiele Frontierville, Treasure Isle und Cafe World. Uff.

Was das Ziel der Spiele ist oder was es mir bringt, ist schwer zu erklären. Man will natürlich immer mehr Punkte sammeln und auf's nächste Level kommen. Und man fühlt sich irgendwie produktiv, wenn man Gemüse sät und erntet und Tiere füttert (Farmville) oder Essen und Kaffee kocht und serviert (Cafeworld).

Was bei Frontierville, dem neuesten Zynga Spiel, von Anfang an Teil des Spiels war, hat jetzt auch in ähnlicher Art bei den anderen Spielen Einzug gehalten: Bestimmte Aufgaben oder Specials, die man erledigen muss/kann. Das bringt konkrete Ziele mit ins Spiel, was mir gut gefällt. Nervig wird's, wenn ich Aufgaben nicht lösen kann, weil ich nicht genug Nachbarn (Mitspieler) hab. So wird man quasi genötigt, alle seine Freunde einzuladen oder Fremde hinzuzufügen oder alternativ mit "echtem" Geld die jeweilige Spielwährung zu kaufen, um voran zu kommen.

Nervig ist auch, dass man bei den meisten Spielen wirklich regelmäßig spielen muss aufgrund der eingebauten Deadlines: es müssen Früchte geerntet oder Gerichte serviert werden innerhalb einer bestimmten Zeit. In CaféWorld braucht das längste Gericht 2 Tage und muss spätestens nach 4 Tagen serviert werden, in Farmville hätte man 8 Tage Luft für z.B. Melonen, die in 4 Tagen reifen und den nächsten 4 geerntet werden müssen. So ist schon ein gewisser Zwang dahinter.

Es gibt aber auch "casual games", die keine Deadlines haben und einfach nur so zum Zeitvertreib gespielt werden können, wann immer man will. Dazu zählen z.B. Music Challenge oder Bejeweled Blitz. Von den Zynga Spielen ist Treasure Isle am angenehmsten - wenn man keine Energie mehr hat und relativ wenig Nachbarn, ist nach relativ kurzer Zeit wieder Pause, bis sich die Energie wieder aufgeladen hat.

Worauf wollte ich jetzt eigentlich hinaus? Also ich bin spielesüchtig und hoffe, es vergeht bald wieder : ) Das war die Kurzfassung : ) Und jetzt ab damit, sonst warte ich wieder 3 Wochen, bis ich einen Beitrag fertig schreibe und veröffentliche ...

Milow concert impressions

Last night I went to an open-air concert in Coburg: Terry Hoax (relatively new German rock band, sound a bit like Fury in the Slaughterhouse), Milow and Reamonn. We got there too late for Terry Hoax, but I didn't mind, I only wanted to see Milow basically. The setting was beautiful - the stage was in the middle of a square surrounded by "royal" buildings (a main palace and several other buildings that used to belong to aristocracy) and the weather had gotten better, too. It had been very mixed all day, changing between sun and rain, but by 7 p.m. the sky was blue.

So anyway, Milow started at about 7:20 as planned. He started singing from backstage and played most songs from his album as well as some good new songs - the only one I recall by name is "She might". He even did 4 songs as encore, among them of course "Ayo Technology", "Out of my hands" (as a beautiful duet with his backing singer Nina) and "One of it" as the very last one. Hope I remember everything correctly : )

He's really good live and you can tell that he enjoys it. The band was very good, too - his guitarist got lots of cheers for singing parts of 2 well-known German pops songs. Funny! Maybe Milow should try that, too (his German is quite good anyway) to get more feedback from the crowd. Most people had come for the headliners Reamonn, I guess, so they weren't too enthusiastic when Milow played. Also, Milow's songs are quite ... I don't know ... soft or quiet, so it's maybe normal that the audience isn't singing along or clapping all the time.

After a break, Reamonn started playing. The first 2 songs I didn't know - they were quite "heavy", i.e. not very "radio-friendly". Then they played "Josephine", which is one of the few Reamonn songs I like. The huge problem I had was Rea's voice. Okay on the radio, but live ... um, no. A little later, a couple of songs everybody knew followed, but we left after about 45 minutes into the gig. Walking back to the car, we enjoyed the lovely old town and the many stars in the dark sky. Ha, isn't that romantic? ;-)

Anmerkung: bei C&A und H&M kauf ihr nur selten und relativ ungern ein. Und von den gestylten 12-jährigen fang ich gar nicht erst an, sonst krisch isch Aggressionen : ) Hab dann allerdings doch noch 2 Negligées gekauft : )
Außerdem ist der Fragebogen wohl schon ziemlich alt, weil von den Serien schon die meisten beendet sind. Nach den Gilmore Girls und The O.C. bin ich schon lang nicht mehr süchtig.

Da meine Lieblingsserien alle pausieren wegen der WM, könnte ich sie eigentlich alle rauslöschen aus der kleinen Übersicht. Hm, ich lass sie jetzt mal drin, da sie hoffentlich im Juni weitergehen.

Und ganz wichtig: Na, wer führt im Firmen-Tippspiel nach dem ersten Wochenende? Moi! Hab 19 Punkte, die auf Platz 2 und 3 haben nur 12. Yay. Wollte erst schreiben allein unter Männern, aber es spielen noch 2 oder 3 andere Frauen mit. Mal sehen, wie's weitergeht. Heute Mittag spielen ja meine geliebten Dänen. Glaub allerdings nicht, dass sie gegen Holland gewinnen.

Und die Deutschen? Waren gestern viel besser als ich gedacht hätte. Net schlecht.

... long time no post. I do have a life, you see. At least I've updated my TV watch-list : ) Lots of new shows / new seasons. None I'm totally crazy about, but some quality stuff among them, such as Lie To Me. Still loving The Mentalist and Castle.

As to the casting shows that I used to watch regularly, well, they just suck these days. Have stopped watching the German version of American Idol. Of the 10 finalists, only one can sing. At least he made it to the semi-finals that are coming up this Saturday. And am not enjoying the new season of Germany's Next Topmodel either. I guess I'm getting old - or finally growing up. Ha.

What else? Spring is coming. Took a while to get used to leaving the office when it's not dark yet. Also coming up is my sister's wedding next month. Exciting stuff : ) (No, really!) I have 2 dresses but no shoes.

Blah. Later, gators.

Schlechtes Gewissen ...

... weil ich schon so lang nix mehr gepostet hab. Hach, ist aber auch ein Stress zur Zeit. Aber eigentlich schöner Stress. Weniger fernsehen, mehr telefonieren und chatten, oder so.

Was noch? Hm. Hab Avatar in 3D gesehen vor ein paar Wochen. War schon cool, aber anstrengend für die Augen, und hinterher hatte ich Kopfschmerzen. Will mir Alice im Wunderland auch in 3D ansehen. Tim Burton Filme sind eh meistens cool.

Was macht das Wetter: es taut - endlich. Sogar im Hof ist kein Schnee oder Eis mehr, und da kommt wenig Sonne hin. Heute hatte es 5 Grad oder so.

Oh Mann, das ist ja alles sehr faszinierend ... Mist. Oh, und ich hatte nen Unfall, aber darüber will ich lieber nicht sprechen. Passiert ist mir nix, Auto sieht auch noch okay aus, obwohl's beschädigt ist.

Fernsehen: momentan wenig. Nicht mal DSDS gefällt mir. Aus der aktuellen Staffel können nur 2 Teilnehmer gut singen. Alle anderen nerven total. Im März geht wieder einiges los bzw. weiter: FlashForward nächsten Montag auf Pro7, neue Folgen von Cold Case, The Mentalist, Gossip Girl, Germanys Next Topmodel usw.

Na der Beitrag hat ja echt mal nen roten Faden ... ich geb's auf ...

Das neue Jahr gefällt mir soweit SUPER! Hab auch noch Urlaub, aber am Montag geht's wieder los - also zurück ins Büro.

Gemacht hab ich nicht besonders viel, oder zumindest nix, was hierher gehört.

Meine neue Lieblingsserie ist GLEE, eine Art Highschool Musical als Serie, aber mit viel absurderen und witzigeren Dialogen und Charakteren (ist ja auch nicht von Disney). Die Serie läuft auf FOX und pausiert jetzt leider bis April.

Außerdem freu ich mich, dass Castle nächsten Monat im dt. TV anlaufen wird (auf kabel eins). Ist ne leichte, charmante Krimiserie (soweit Leichen oder das Aufklären von Morden leicht und charmant sein kann ...). Wie immer gefällt mir die Kabbelei der beiden Hauptfiguren Rick Castle (Bestseller-Krimiautor) und Kate Beckett (Detective beim NYPD).

Bereits nächste Woche startet HawthoRNe, eine Arzt- bzw. Krankenhausserie mit Will Smiths Ehefrau Jada in der Hauptrolle. Werde wohl wegen Michael Vartan, den ich seit ALIAS total mag, mal einschalten, aber so der Hammer ist die Serie wahrscheinlich nicht. Sounds dirty, but isn't. Ha.

Anyway, here's another sort of general update:

The office move went well. Compared to the other 2 companies that moved with us, we seem to have been the most organized - despite my presence ;-) All my colleagues were there and helping. We were pretty much settled in by the afternoon. There's still some work to be done on the building itself, though.

I'm not feeling very christmassy - again. But I did go to the famous Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt this year and had some Glühwein. Still have to make a photo calendar for my parents. Hope the prints will arrive today.

Wanted to go see a romantic comedy with my sister on the weekend but the 2 movies we had picked as options weren't on anymore. I'm talking about New in Town with Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr. and Love Happens with Jennifer Aniston.

I've been listening to Milow a lot this past week. He's a singer/songwriter from Belgium and had a big hit with a cover version of 50 Cent's Ayo Technology. I watched a concert from Berlin that was streamed live on Facebook. He even did a cover version of Joni Mitchell's song River. Beautiful. He has a soft voice and good lyrics, I think.

It's freezing cold and snowed for the past 3 days. Still went to work by car after I had brushed off all the snow. The weather forecast says we'll get a rainy, mild Christmas. As always.

This is so random. I should start writing blog entries that focus on one topic. Damn.

General update

I've updated the list of what I'm watching. A couple of seasons ended in the past 2 weeks. Desperate Housewives will be back in January. When there will be new episodes of Chuck and Cold Case, I have no idea. But I've read that 2 shows that premiered this fall in the US will start airing here in January (Wednesdays on Pro7 after Desperate Housewieves): Vampire Diaries from The WB and HawthoRNe from TNT. I'm not that much into vampires (even though the rest of the female world seems to be in love with Edward Cullen/Robert Pattinson from the Twilight book/movie series), but I'm always curious about new TV shows so I'll give it a try. HawthorRNE stars Michael Vartan, who was Vaughn in one of my all-time favourite shows Alias, so how could I not watch?!

What else: my best friend and her boyfriend are now completely obsessed with playing FarmVille on Facebook and I guess I am to blame. I still play, too, but I'm getting a bit annoyed with the game because it's so time-consuming and always puts pressure on you to do stuff every 5 minutes. So I guess I prefer casual games like Biotronic which you can play for 5 minutes and you don't have to come back to check if your cranberries are fully grown or your cows need to be milked or whatever.

Speaking of Facebook: my boss has decided we should keep private and business stuff separate on social media networks, but I'm not sure how I'm supposed to do that or why. I only have 6 people as friends on Facebook who qualify as clients and they are not really decision-makers at their radio stations so I don't see what harm it does if they see a funny video clip I share or a status update from me. I think what my boss wants to avoid is that we come across as unprofessional like some people who post silly pictures every 5 minutes which makes you wonder if they ever work. I try to stay away from Facebook during working hours anyway so that won't happen. My co-workers seem to disagree with my boss as well cos they said it could improve your relationship with clients if you get to know them better by interacting with them on Facebook. So we'll see how that debate continues.

Other stuff at the office: we're moving in a week from Monday and I'm very nervous. The new building is only about a mile from the one we're in now. But there's still a lot of stuff to pack and to organize. I hope my colleagues/superiors won't leave me all alone on moving day cos they want to work from home and not be bothered with the chaos. I can just see them coming in later to complain that the furniture is not in the right place. Argh. Well, I don't want to be too negative about it. I'll just have to tell myself that everything will work out fine ... *sigh*

The past weeks have been exhausting cos I've basically been working 50 hours a week which is no fun at all. And my skin is worse than ever. I have psoriasis and it's back with a vengeance itching like hell literally from head to toe. And now I'm not even sure if it is psoriasis. My boss keeps saying I should try homoepathy, but I'm not convinced. For now I just hope it'll go away soon and put lotion on the affected areas. Great. I also need to get a couple of wisdom teeth out. I've been putting that off for years. I really need to start looking after myself better. That'll be my first new year's resolution: make doctors' appointments. I love it already. Not. Argh.

What else: my sister is getting married next May to a guy from Milan, Italy. I like him a lot. My family met his family last weekend. His parents seem nice, too.

Ha. Now you know everything that's going on, more or less.

All sorts of TV stuff

Uh-oh, long time no post. As I might or might not have mentioned before, Facebook has taken over my life. Now that I've discovered the games you can play on there, I'm spending even more time on the site.

Anyway, I just saw the comment to the post below so I thought I'd reply in a separate post and also add some other stuff.

24: it still is and always has been in real time. Every season has 24 episodes for the 24 hours of one day. It's always about Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) saving the world, more or less. In the previous seasons he was an agent for the CTU (I think that stands for counter terrorist unit) in Los Angeles. There's always some sort of terrorist threat against the USA and especially its president and Bauer tries to stop it by all means. It's all very exciting with many twists and turns and lots of action. I can really recommend the show - even the latest season (7) has gotten better than it was at the beginning.

The Wire: I've heard of it - and only positive things, I think. According to Serienjunkies it's only been on Pay TV in Germany.

The Legend of the Seeker: pretty new on German TV. Based on a series of fantasy novels by Terry Goodkind and shot in New Zealand. I'm not sure how similar the novels are to The Lord of the Rings, but she show does look a bit like a rip-off. I probably wouldn't have started watching it if it wasn't for the beautiful scenery. I enjoyed the pilot, but the other episodes I've seen so far were rather mediocre.

Private Practice: am trying to keep up with the current U.S. season. Very much enjoyed Miranda Bailey's visit to L.A. (she's a regular on Grey's Anatomy, of which PP is a spin-off). Favorite quote: "This place is better than a telenovela". Hehe.

Lipstick Jungle: not the best show ever. Only watch it because Kirby Atwood (Robert Buckley) runs around shirtless most of the time. Pure eye candy. Hee. Oh, and how can you name a character Kirby?? It always makes me think of that fluffy pink or blue thing floating around like a cloud in one of my sister's old NEC games.

No, wait, I forgot something: there's a new TV channel that started this month. zdf_neo. It's digital, but I can watch it via Zattoo on my computer. It shows all sorts of stuff previously unaired in Germany, such as 30 Rock, Spooks, Hustle etc. But they are on at 22:30 on weekdays so either I'm too tired or watching something else. Too bad.

First of all, I thought the video would be embedded. Damn.

Secondly, I’ve now paid more attention to Robbie’s lyrics and can’t help smiling every time I hear this line: “All we’ve ever wanted is to look good naked, hoping someone can take it”. You gotta love RW for this.

Thirdly, greatness vs. asshole-ness (brought up by a friend's comment): I don’t think you necessarily have to be an asshole to be great. Yes, Robbie is a poser on stage, but that’s part of what makes him such a great entertainer. I’d never call him an asshole. As to his greatness, I think that has a lot to do with who he works with. As mentioned before, I hated his last album Rudebox although I own all of his other CDs. I know he wanted to try something new but it just didn’t work for me. Now he has teamed up with songwriting partner (or producer??) Guy Chambers again and it seems to have been a good decision. We’ll have to wait and see how the whole album sounds once it comes out.

I could go on with psycho-analyzing Robbie or go into a philosophical discussion of what defines greatness, but I guess I’ll postpone that : )

Other random stuff that's on my mind: I'm wondering why I don't like Season 7 of 24 as much as the ones before.
Possible reasons:
- It's on too late (from 10:30 to 00:30) so I'm just too tired to properly notice the good quality.
- The German dubbing is bad - well, it always has been on that show. Some of the voices just sound wrong.
- The quality really has gone down. Must check the web for reviews of Day 7. Miss President Palmer.

A couple of hours ago I logged into Facebook briefly at work. I wanted to post something on a newly added friend's wall but got an error message. Then I tried to suggest friends for him but got another error message. I looked up a radio station and clicked on "become a fan". Nothing happened. I gave up, but couldn't even log out properly. Now I'm at home and can't even log in anymore. This sucks. I guess I'm addicted : )

I've been meaning to post some thoughts on Facebook anyway. Can't remember them now. Great. It was something along the lines of "Modern communication is very strange. It's for people like me who are lonely, but need to feel connected. But in the end it just makes you feel even lonelier." Or something like that. Not very uplifting. Sigh. Whatever.

What else:
Robbie Williams announced yesterday that a new single and album will come out in October and November. Yay, can't wait!

Public Enemies (Christian Bale's new movie) opened today in German movie theaters. Don't have anyone to come along. Hm. Still want to see it on the big screen. Must work that out somehow.

Doctor's Diary

Wer hätte's gedacht, es gibt noch gut geschriebene deutsche Serien - und ich hab ein Jahr gebraucht, um drauf zu kommen. Ich rede von der RTL-Ärzteserie Doctor's Diary - Männer sind die beste Medizin. Anhand der Trailer vom letzten Jahr hatte ich gedacht, es wäre ein billiger Abklatsch von Grey's Anatomy. Dass die Serie einige Preise abgeräumt hat, hätte mir zu denken geben sollen. Bin aber erst jetzt drauf gekommen. Morgen startet die 2. Staffel und man konnte sich aus diesem Anlass auf RTL Now die 8 Folgen der ersten Staffel kostenlos anschauen.

Das hab ich in der letzten Woche gemacht und war sehr positiv überrascht. Die Serie ist eher ein Mix aus Verliebt in Berlin und Bridget Jones im Krankenhaus. Die Dialoge sind witzig und die Darsteller sympathisch.

Im Mittelpunkt steht Dr. Margarete (Gretchen) Haase, die, nachdem ihr Verlobter sie betrogen hat, im Krankenhaus, wo ihr Vater Professor ist, als Assistenzärztin anfängt. Sie zieht wieder bei ihren Eltern ein, trägt bevorzugt rosa Klamotten und kämpft mit ihrem Gewicht. Einer der Oberärzte ist ihr Schulschwarm Marc Meier, der sie damals eigentlich nur geärgert hat und sie auch jetzt noch "Hasenzahn" nennt. Er ist ein arroganter Weiberheld, in dem Gretchen trotzdem einen guten Kern vermutet. Dann gibt es da noch den Gynäkologen Mehdi Kaan, der nett, sensibel und zuverlässig wirkt, aber einige dunkle Geheimnisse mit sich rumträgt. Die Serie ist nicht revolutionär, aber sehr unterhaltsam und empfehlenswert insgesamt - zumindest für weibliche Zuschauer.

So ... I guess I should say some things about Michael Jackson's death.

When/where did I hear about it: at about 6:40 a.m. on the radio while I was under the shower.

How do I feel about the whole thing? I guess I was surprised, but not particularly moved, so I didn't cry or anything. I remembered that my best friend in kindergarten/elementary school had the Bad album on tape and I borrowed and copied it to one of my many music cassettes.

What do I think about Michael Jackson in general: I definitely appreciate his contribution to music. Lots of great songs. But as a person he just seemed kind of weird. My theory is that it was because of his strict father, due to whom he didn't have a normal childhood. I wasn't a Jacko fan. I never bought any of his albums or singles.

His songs: As I said, I do like his music. It's hard to pick a favourite because there are so many good songs. Dirty Diana was always one I loved and it's getting played on the radio here quite frequently at the moment. I can name 3 that I hate: The Earth Song, Heal the world and You are not alone. So in general I like his older releases more than the recent ones. And I don't think there would have been good stuff to come if he had lived longer.

Now I feel mean and cold-hearted. Hm. But I just know that I was much more shocked by the deaths of Kurt Cobain and River Phoenix in the 90s because they were so young and had a creative future ahead of them.

What else: I've updated the "Stuff I like on TV" section (I know that's not the correct name. Whatever.). Life is taking a summer break. They've interrupted the 2nd season after ep 6 and started from the beginning again. And Without a Trace is back on the air but the order of the eps is messed up. I'm also still watching German telenovela Alisa and have discovered recently that the male lead looks very much like German tennis player Tommy Haas so I've tried to watch as many of his matches in Wimbledon as possible (which wasn't easy because they tended to start in the early afternoon when I was still at work).

Weekends

After 2 weekends away, I'm back. Okay, I've been back all week, but too busy to post. Although the work week wasn't too stressful, but still I'm exhausted in the evenings. Especially my eyes feel strained. Add an optometrist (?) to the list of doctors I need to see.

Anyway ... one weekend I was at Lake Constance with my family. Weather sucked for the most part. Friday night was cool and cloudy but okay. Saturday it rained all the time and we were soaked after 2 hours of strolling through the shopping streets of the old town of Lindau. Sunday was sunny so we walked around in Wasserburg and played some minigolf.

The other weekend I went to see a friend who just moved to a new (and beautiful!) apartment. It was so good to spend some time with her and also with another friend I hadn't seen in a couple of years.

So this weekend I'm taking it slow. Have been doing laundry, had my sister and her boyfriend over for a little while, met a former classmate/friend for a drink at night, had icecream twice in one day (how scandalous!) watched TV, etc. Blah.

Nie mehr 2. Liga!

Naja, zumindest nicht bis zum nächsten Abstieg … hehe … aber momentan ist die Laune bei mir als Club-Fan sehr gut. Hatte kurzfristig Karten bekommen für das Spiel der Spiele (Relegation, Rückspiel mit einem 3:0 aus dem Hinspiel im Rücken) und es war so geil im Stadion am Sonntag. Beste Stimmung, die ich dort je erlebt hab – und das Wetter hat auch gepasst. In der ersten Halbzeit hab ich noch ein bisschen gezittert, trotz des 3:0 Vorsprungs – beim Club weiß man ja nie … er ist ja bekanntlich ein Depp … Aber dann fiel nach einer halben Stunde das 1:0 und endlich traute sich die Nordkurve, „Nie mehr 2. Liga“ anzustimmen. Die restlichen Minuten der 1. Halbzeit wurde ununterbrochen gesungen und die Welle ging mehrmals ums ganze Stadion. Schööön!

Zweite Halbzeit war dann aufm Platz nicht mehr wirklich viel los. Kann man ihnen auch nicht verdenken, nachdem es inzwischen 2:0 stand. Nur ne Rauchbombe bzw. Rumgeknalle im Cottbusser Block trübte kurzzeitig die Stimmung und die Sicht aufs Feld. Aber wir Zuschauer vertrieben uns mit weiteren Gesängen und rhythmischem Klatschen die Zeit.

Nach Abpfiff wurde dann der Rasen gestürmt – war eh klar, da kann der Stadionsprecher noch so viel an das Verständnis der Zuschauer appellieren. Ich bin allerdings brav auf meinem super Platz geblieben. Hat dann etwas gedauert, bis die Mannschaft sich auf einer Art Balkon auf der Haupttribüne wieder zeigte – dank farbigen Anzeigentafeln bzw. Videoleinwänden konnte man auch von der Gegengerade gut sehen, was dort vor sich ging. Dabei hat sich wieder mal gezeigt, dass Fußballer keine großen Redner sind. Hehe. Es sei ihnen verziehen.

Ungefähr ne Dreiviertelstunde nach Spielende haben wir uns dann auf den Heimweg gemacht. War nicht mal Gequetsche in der S-Bahn – ich hatte sogar hin und zurück einen Sitzplatz.

Zu den Fangesängen muss ich übrigens sagen, neben Altbekanntem wie dem Vereinslied „Die Legende lebt“, oder „Oh wie ist das schön“ oder Sprechchören wie „Hier regiert der FCN“ gab es auch einige Sachen, wo ich trotz genauem Hinhören nicht richtig verstanden habe, was die Fans mir sagen wollten. Hab bei einem Lied immer nur „FCKW“ verstanden, aber das kann ja nicht sein. Hm. Seltsam. Ist wieder typisch für mich, dass ich nicht aufs Spiel, sondern auf die "Musik" achte, haha.

Aber alles in allem hatte ich nen super Nachmittag und freu mich total, dass der Club wieder erstklassig ist. Wobei einige Kollegen meinen, mit dieser extrem jungen Mannschaft werden wir uns in der 1. Liga ziemlich umschauen. Naja, müssen wir uns halt noch mit ein paar erfahrenen Spielern verstärken, dann können wir uns vielleicht länger als ein Jahr da oben halten. Mal sehen.

Hab heute mal 98.8 Kiss FM aus Berlin gehört. Dabei sind mir 2 Sachen aufgefallen:
Wie planet radio aus Frankfurt nennen sie ihr Funkhaus / ihre Räumlichkeiten “Tower”. Klingt ja sooo cool. Was die Musik angeht, sind die beiden sich recht ähnlich. Aber die Moderatoren bei planet sind weniger krass und daher für mich angenehmer/erträglicher (obwohl ich ja altersmäßig schon etwas über die Kernzielgruppe hinaus bin, glaub ich). Jedenfalls war das mein erster Höreindruck.
Und offenbar hat Hitradio N1 hier in Nürnberg sich beim Namen seiner Morningshow von den Berlinern inspirieren lassen (um’s mal höflich auszudrücken). Oder war’s gar andersrum? Kann nicht beurteilen, wer den Begriff „knallwach“ zuerst benutzt hat. Naja. Hätte man sich denken können, dass sowas bei mehr als einem Sender auftaucht. Ist ja bei den meisten Sachen so, z.B. bei diversen Gewinnspielen und Aktionen.
Jetzt hör ich gerade 97.1 AMP Radio aus Los Angeles. Der Aussage einer befreundeten Amerikanerin, dass man in Deutschland musikalisch den USA ein halbes Jahr hinterher hinkt, kann ich beim hören von AMP keinesfalls zustimmen – da laufen genau wie hier (z.B. auf den oben genannten planet und Kiss) dieselben Titel von Lady GaGa, Kid Cudi, Ne-Yo usw.
Was die Frequenz von AMP angeht, mit der ist man ja in Nürnberg und Umgebung bestens vertraut – wegen Gong 97.1, wie N1 ein Sender des Funkhaus Nürnberg – nicht, dass ich ein Riesen-Fan von denen wäre, aber zumindest versorgen sie mich mit vielen Infos und Live-Übertragungen zum 1.FCN und lokalen Verkehrs- und Wettermeldungen.
Zu den US-Radiosendern wollte ich noch sagen: es leuchtet mit nicht ganz ein, wieso manche Streams von Deutschland aus gehen und man auf andere nicht zugreifen darf. In England ist es so ähnlich. Komisch.

Seems it's been a good week for good new songs. Some of my current faves:

Noisettes - Don't upset the rhythm. Groovy, although the band name reminds me of chocolate
David Guetta & Kelly Rowland - When love takes over. Catchy dance stuff with a piano that reminds me of Coldplay.
Jack's Mannequin - The resolution. Found this on YouTube. No, wait, I think I saw it in the Swiss Airplay charts. Sounds a bit like The Fray. Check out the live acoustic version here.
Kerli - Walking on Air. A little strange but catchy. She looks like Lady GaGa but her sound is more ... I don't know ... floating or something. Ha, not the best description. Sorry.
Daniel Merriweather - Change. British babyface. Cool song. Reminds me slightly of The Script but it's less melancholy. Is that an adjective? Sigh. Whatever. Groovy, baby! So now I'm quoting Austin Powers. I'm scaring myself. Heh.

I bet my formatting is different once again. Argh. Whatever. Blah.

Eurovision

As every year in the middle of May, the Eurovision Song Contest took place last night in Moscow. I still think of it as the Grand Prix because it used to be called Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson or something like that. Anyway … I watched it kind of half-heartedly. Norway won. I’d read beforehand that they were expected to do very well and had seen the song online. It was a very clear win. I don’t mind. It’s a sweet catchy song by a young man with a boyish face and a violin. In second place was Iceland. Their song was a heart-wrenching (but not too depressing) ballad by a young lady called Yohanna who looked very pretty with her reddish-blond hair and blue dress. So it seems that this year the crazy stage show was not as popular as the years before which is definitely a good thing. I also liked Portugal’s song which was kind of folkloristic with lots of acoustic instruments such as guitar, percussion and flute and a beautiful melancholy melody. Denmark had a song written by Ronan Keating - BTW, where was Ireland?? Eliminated in the semi-final?? – and sung by a guy called Brinck who sounded very much like Ronan, too. That was almost it with the “normal” songs. Okay, there was GB, too, with a song by Andrew Lloyd Webber who also played the piano during the performance. The singer was a lady called Jade Ewen I think. Great voice. Oh, and France with Patricia Kaas. I love her deep voice but the song wasn’t very catchy.

The rest was crazy dancing and wild rhythms and half-naked people. Or just plain awful songs like ours. The “German” team was made up of producer/DJ Alex Christensen and 2 Americans: musical singer Oscar Loya (who I’ve never heard of before – he was in West Side Story apparently) and strip dancer (although she probably wouldn’t like to be called that) Dita von Teese. Oscar’s outfit consisted of a pair of silver sequin leggings – nobody male or female should ever wear such an atrocity – and a black shirt which he ripped open half way through the song to show off his hairless chest and sixpack. Come to think of it, he looked quite a bit like Barbie Ken. Not the type of man I like. And Dita …. Well, she rode on a black thing in the background which kind of was a mix of a sofa in the shape of a pair of lips and an electric bull. For the first half of the song I thought the Russians had decided to keep her off-camera completely but then she came into the center of the stage and danced next to Oscar in one of her typical black underwear thingies. What a ridiculous attempt to win votes by putting something sexy on stage. But the song … Miss Kiss Kiss Bang. Vomit-inducing, believe me. And totally annoying. To be honest, I though the fact that I hated it meant that our chances weren’t so bad. Glad I was wrong. We ended up fifth from the bottom or something (at number 20 out of 25 countries).

Surprise – I actually like a Reamonn song! It’s the new one Moments Like This. Full of positive energy and very catchy. This and Josephine and Serpentine are the only ones I really like, the rest of their stuff is just kinda lame.

Other new good stuff:
Green Day – Know your enemy. It rocks, that’s why.
Sunrise Avenue – The whole story
Offspring – Kristy are you doing okay. I think they played at Rock im Park last year and looked awful and didn’t sound too good either, but this one’s VERY catchy and not bad. The other new one You’re gonna go far kid is quite good as well.
U2 - Magnificent. Hated Get on your boots, the first single off the new album, but this one is great.

DSDS 6

Die Staffel ist fast zu Ende und ich hab mich noch nicht dazu geäußert. Schande, haha. Nee, liegt wohl daran, dass das Ganze langweilig ist. Ich guck zwar, fiebere aber nicht mit und mach meistens nebenbei was anderes oder schau nur die Wiederholung am Sonntag.

Aber ein paar Sachen hab ich doch zu sagen. Kommen wir also zu den Top 4 Kandidaten:

Dominik (der ja gestern – oder war’s schon nach Mitternacht? – rausgewählt wurde): Netter Junge. Den Vorwurf, er gehöre nicht auf eine Bühne und sei langweilig, fand ich teilweise unfair. Okay, am Anfang hat er fast ausschließlich James Blunt Titel gesungen, und DSDS ist nun mal kein Imitatoren-Wettbewerb. Aber andererseits hat doch auf der Bühne stehen und Musik machen nicht zwangsweise mit großer Bühnenshow oder großen Gesten oder Tanzeinlagen zu tun, auch wenn das die Jury oft so darstellt. In der Musikbranche gibt es eben Rampensäue und stillere Musiker und beide haben ihre Berechtigung. Dominik hat eben Songs von Künstlern aus letzterer Kategorie gesungen, wie von Jack Johnson, Travis usw. Kommt halt im Fernsehen nicht so gut. Pech. Seine Stimme fand ich okay und ihn sympathisch. Aber mit 17 ist er noch sehr jung und ich bin mir eh sehr unsicher, ob man irgendjemandem überhaupt den Sieg bei DSDS wünschen sollte, also kann er froh sein, ausgeschieden zu sein. Er sollte mal schauen, ob er selber Songs schreiben kann, vielleicht wird’s dann noch was mit der Sänger-Karriere in ein paar Jahren.

Sarah: Tolle Stimme, keine Frage. Ich find’s aber bedenklich, dass sie so gut wie null Englisch kann. Ist net so glaubwürdig, wenn man den Text nur übers Hörverständnis nachsingt, ohne zu wissen, was die Worte bedeuten. Klar, sie legt in ihre Stimme viel Gefühl, aber ich frag mich echt immer, ob sie versteht, worum es in dem jeweiligen Lied geht. Naja.

Daniel: er ist der Einzige, dessen Stimme diesen Wiedererkennungswert hat, von dem immer alle reden. Und ich mag Stimmen wie seine. Soulig, tief, samtig, und ne gute Kopfstimme. Wie er Sweet Dreams von den Eurythmics gesungen hat vor ein paar Wochen, das war schon super. Und es freut mich für ihn, dass er durch die Sendung mehr Selbstbewusstsein bekommen hat nachdem er wohl in der Schule ziemlich fies behandelt wurde. Außerdem scheint er am Boden geblieben zu sein, so was find ich auch immer sympathisch. Er erinnert mich am meisten an den Vorjahressieger Thomas Godoj, aber auch der ist ja inzwischen in der Versenkung verschwunden, so dass man sich echt fragen muss, ob man irgendjemandem dessen Stimme man mag, den Sieg bei DSDS ernsthaft wünschen sollte. Manchmal wurde vielleicht der Siegertitel ein paar Mal im Radio gespielt, aber danach kam nix. Schon komisch.

Und die Vierte im Bunde: Annemarie. Eigentlich hat die Show sie als Siegerin verdient, auch wenn die Jury sie mit schlechter Kritik überschüttet. Ha. Ich weiß, ich bin zynisch. Sie hat es voll drauf, sich auf der Bühne zu präsentieren und hat wohl einen Deal mit der BILD-Zeitung. Ein Unterwäsche-Shoot pro Woche oder so, haha. Wat weiß ich. Medien-Hure nenn ich so was. Die Amis würden es wahrscheinlich anerkennend professionell nennen. Ich find sie erschreckend abgebrüht. Wie wird man so? Und was kann man noch glauben? Ist sie die Hexe / Zicke / Intrigantin, als die die anderen Kandidaten sehen? Ich denke, sie ist auf jeden Fall ein verwöhntes Einzelkind mit dem unbedingten Willen, ein Star zu werden. Aber dass 10-jährige Mädchen sie für ihren Kampfgeist bewundern …. Das find ich bedenklich. Passt aber nur zu dem ganzen Konzept und der Show. Was ihre Stimme angeht, na ja, nicht schlecht, aber sie hat nix einzigartiges.

Ich find’s eh schade, dass Teenager es nach wie vor total erstrebenswert finden, bei dieser Sendung oder ähnlichen Casting-Formaten mitzumachen. Sie sollten sich echt mal vor Augen führen, was aus den bisherigen Gewinnern und auch anderen Teilnehmern geworden ist – nämlich nicht viel. Und trotzdem will offenbar jeder Superstar werden. Uff. Klar wird man so schnell einer breiten Öffentlichkeit bekannt, aber meiner Meinung nach wäre es für jemanden, dem Musik wirklich am Herzen liegt, besser, einen anderen Weg zu einem Plattenvertrag zu suchen, als so eine Show, wo man im Prinzip verheizt und dann allein gelassen wird. Sprach der große Moralapostel, der aber selber die Sendungen anschaut und damit dazu beiträgt, dass sie weiter laufen. Obwohl, zu meiner Verteidigung, die letzte Popstars Staffel hab ich nicht geschaut. Gaaanz toll. Und das Supertalent auch nicht. Und auf Pro7 sucht Germany’s next Showstar mit DJ Bobo (schon immer einer meiner „totalen“ Lieblinge) kann ich auch wirklich verzichten …

Kurzes Update

Hatte ein paar Tage frei, über Ostern sowieso und auch jetzt ein verlängertes Wochenende. Tut gut. Nur die Bauarbeiten gegenüber machen nach wie vor Lärm.

Am Freitag hatte mein PC nen Virus. Super. Läuft aber alles normal und daher weigere ich mich, das System neu aufzusetzen. Mal ganz abgesehen davon, dass ich bisher keine Recovery CD erstellt hatte und mich mit "Neu-Aufsetzen" auch wenig auskenn. Mal abwarten. Jedenfalls nervt sowas, vor allem wenn der Komplett-Scan 5 Std dauert und man ihn blöderweise erst abends um 20 Uhr startet ...

Dann war ich sowohl Samstag als auch Sonntag Abend außer Haus. Neuer Rekord. Samstag hab ich mal wieder festgestellt, dass meine Flirt-Fähigkeiten so ziemlich gleich null sind. Oder ich einfach zu zynisch bin. Hätte nämlich einem sicher 5-10 Jahre jüngeren Typen, der wollte, dass ich die Leute, mit denen ich in der "Lounge" oder wie man sowas heutzutage nennt war, dazu überrede, zu einer Privatparty bei ihm zu kommen, am liebsten ins Gesicht gesagt, was er denn eigentlich bitte will. Was Ernsthaftes von mir? Ja klar. Was von meiner Freundin, die verliebt mit ihrem Freund rumturtelte? Sicher auch nicht. Hm. Tanzen wollte er. Zu spät, da war ich schon am Gehen. Hehe. Wie auch immer.

Gestern war ich bei einem Klassikradio Filmmusik-Konzert. Seeehr schöööön.

TV-Update:
Grey's Anatomy Staffel 5 fing besser an, als ich gedacht hatte. Die 2 befürchteten Dramen aus der Vorschau waren nur ein Alptraum bzw. ne Verarschung, also ist Derek weder schwer verletzt noch Rose von ihm schwanger. Mal sehen, wie die Staffel sich weiter entwickelt. Nicht so toll, soweit ich gehört hab.

Gossip Girl läuft endlich auch in Deutschland. Hab wie immer an den Synchronsprechern einiges auszusetzen. Naja. Die Serie ist trotzdem cool, auch wenn die meisten Figuren halb so alt sind wie ich. Aber ich find eh den Vater von Dan und Jenny am attraktivsten. Einziges Problem: Rufus Humphrey?! Gibt es nen un-sexy-eren Namen?! Leider ist seine Synchronstimme eine derer, die ich für fehlbesetzt halte. Seufz.

Ha, it worked! Have to edit the About part, tough. And add the widgets I had before.

I have done ZERO today and still feel tired. Damn. But at least my blog looks pretty now, hehe.

Managed to fix the coment problem (you can't comment if comment format is set as embedded) by setting them as pop-up. Also added the trackback thingy although I can't imagine anybody would trackback to me.

People who use this template also seem to be having problems with image-wrapping, but as I hardly ever post pics I don't really mind.

What's still not working is the recent articles / recent comments thing which should be below the About section. Also seems to be caused by changes Blogger made. Whatever.

Guess I should have read the comments on the page where I downloaded the Dilectio template first. The problem I encountered is caused by recent changes Blogger made, as can be read here. I'll try the solution they suggest, but if that doesn't work I'll go back to Rounders or some other template.

Better but not good

As you can see I managed to use the Dilectio template ... but the middle column is not as it should be (red and orange with a search box and about area as can be seen here in the demo).

I manually deleted the searchbox and about thing in the html code but maybe I should just have changed the type to css or xml or whatever. But before that there were those 2 other error messages I got about the recent posts and recent comments widgets so I deleted those manually as well. Apart from the red and orange box in the middle column, some navigation should be showing up above this left text column. Oh I hate it when nothing works properly and you can't find any good instructions on how to fix this.

God, I'm tired. It's past midnight. Must sleep. Will try to fix this Sunday morning or so.

So I wanted a template that looks less like winter and more like spring. But all sorts of error messages came up with the 2 templates I tried (notepad chaos and dilectio). I wish I knew some html to allow me to fix the problem. The colorvoid template I had before still works, but I don't want to go back to that. Damn.

Oh Mann, bin ich froh, dass ich zuhause bin und es irgendwie geschafft hab, keinen Unfall zu haben.

Mein Auto verhält sich immer noch seltsam, so dass ich an jeder Ampel denke, es säuft mir ab (und das bei nem Automatik). Das Ganze hebt meine Stimmung nicht gerade. Aber in die Werkstatt, in der ich letztens war, will ich eigentlich nicht nochmal. Obwohl ich die eigentlich zusammenstauchen müsste, dass alles schlimmer geworden ist als vor der Inspektion. Aber dazu bin ich ein zu großer Schisser.

Naja, jedenfalls hat heut früh kurz nachdem ich losgefahren war jemand in meiner Nähe gehupt und die Frau an der Ampel in der Spur neben mir hat rübergeguckt. Bin mir nicht bewusst, irgendwas falsch gemacht zu haben, keine Ahnung, ob ich gemeint war oder ob sie überhaupt gehupt hatte oder was weiß ich. Dann war noch ein Auffahrunfall auf dem Weg in die Arbeit, der kurz bevor ich an der Ecke vorbei kam, passiert sein muss.

Aber das war alles nix gegen meinen Heimweg. Okay, es waren über 20 Grad, aber mir war nicht bewusst, dass heute die Osterferien anfangen (ich dachte, das ist erst nächste Woche). Also war noch mehr Verkehr als sonst an einem Freitag gegen 17 Uhr. Kurz nachdem ich aus dem Ort, wo ich arbeite, rausgefahren war, sah ich schon auf einer Autobahnbrücke, über die ich fahren muss, die Feuerwehr. Aber dort ist es zweispurig, also dachte ich, ich komm vorbei. Hinter mir kam dann auch noch ein weiteres Feuerwehrauto angedüst. Aber es war nix mit Geradeausfahren und ich musste auf die Autobahn, die ich gerade verlassen hatte, wieder auffahren, wie die Polizei mir zuwinkte. Okay, bin ich also direkt in der Einfahrt geblieben, die auch ne Ausfahrt ist, weil da 2 Autobahnausfahrten ganz kurz hintereinander kommen. Ha, aber da war auch Polizei und ein Unfall. Panik. Wo führt die Autobahn hin, wenn ich geradeaus weiterfahren muss, anstatt rechts rauszufahren?? Hilfe. Aber ich konnte dann hinter dem Unfall doch noch rausbiegen. Uff. Dann kam der Stadtverkehr-Stau. Toll. Dann ging's besser, aber in den engen zugeparkten Kopfsteinpflaster-Sträßchen hier in meiner Ecke von Nürnberg war dann so ne Vespa-Fahrerin hinter mir. Ich fahr halt vorsichtig, weil wie gesagt die Straßen am Rand voll parkender Autos stehen und die Fahrbahn an einigen Stellen verengt ist. Und ich lass halt die entgegenkommenden Autos durch, da ich nicht rücksichtslos rumbrettere. Dann kam ne Straßenecke, wo mehrere Mütter mit ihren kleinen Kindern standen. Ich fahr so und hör Frauengeschrei. Dachte, es ist eine der Mütter. Aber als ich dann links in meine Straße eingebogen bin und die Vespa hinter mir geradeaus weiterfuhr, ging das Geschrei weiter. Ich glaub, die Vespafahrerin wollte mir irgendwas sagen ... tja, hab aufgrund des Radios und des Motorengeräuschs aber nix verstanden. Wenn ich nicht Schiebedach und Fenster offen gehabt hätte, hätte ich wahrscheinlich nicht mal gemerkt, dass sie was von mir will. Keine Ahnung, was ihr nicht gepasst hat. Kann mir nur denken, dass es meine vorsichtige Fahrweise war. Pffff. Aber irgendwie hat mich die ganze Heimfahrt ziemlich geärgert und fertig gemacht und mir die Wochendend-Laune versaut. Alles Deppen. Kein Wunder, dass ich am liebsten meine Wohnung nicht verlasse. Und dass bei dem tollen Wetter ... seufz.

Kings of Leon

I know they’ve been around for a while but I only heard about them a few months ago. My best friend entered their song Sex on Fire as her current favourite song in one of these meme / questionnaire things I had sent her and I had no idea what she was talking about. You know, we’re a bit behind here in Bavaria : ) Of course they’d been playing that song for a while on 1Live in NRW. They never really played in on the radio here. Well, maybe on NRJ or Star FM. Anyway ... I liked it and the new single Use Somebody even more. Bought the album. Have only listened to it once so far to be honest.

Anyway, the band played a few concerts in Germany recently. And 1Live arranged a special concert in a movie theatre (I think – at least it was a small location called the Gloria) in Cologne which they recorded and showed on TV last Sunday night. I taped it and watched it a couple of days ago.

My thoughts:
- Why does the band wait 45 minutes before they say hi to the audience??? I also wish they’d introduced some of the songs (such as saying this song is called Charmer and it’s from our 3rd album or whatever). But they’re probably too immersed in their music to do any of that.

- Two of the guys must be vampires. For one, Nathan, the drummer. He was lit in a way that made him look very pale and with his long dark hair he kinda looked like the guy from The Crow movie. And Jared, the bass player, has a hair style just like Robert Pattinson in Twilight, so that made him my second vampire. Hehe.

- It was at times painful to watch Caleb, the singer. You can see that in the Use Somebody video as well. His face looks like he’s suffering through the song. And he hardly ever smiles at all. Only caught him smiling once in the whole show. Okay, this is not High School Musical feel good music, but come on ...

- I also found it hard to understand the lyrics most of the time. I felt like he could have been singing in Swedish or French and it wouldn’t have made a difference to me.

- I was surprised they played a lot of older songs. I was expecting more or less only the songs from the current album.

I know all of this sounds very negative, but those were just little things I noticed. I still like KoL. Caleb has a unique voice I like a lot and their songs are very intense and that’s both good.

This is just my general blah.

I've had some car problems for a while. Have found a garage now that isn't too far from where I work. Things aren't quite fixed yet, but it's nothing major, just some electronic problem left to be repaired.

What else? Hm, not much really. This week a new telenovela started on TV. I didn't really want to watch it, I was just curious about the cast and everything, but now of course I find the male lead pretty attractive and will keep watching. It's supposed to air for a year and I hope they won't drag it out forever, but end it after the initially announced 240 episodes. Oh, BTW, the show is called Alisa - Folge deinem Herzen (Follow your heart). Awwww ... hehe. I know, the storylines and characters are all very predictable, but I still enjoy watching it when I get home from work. I guess you call that escapism, but I've got a right to have that. And I prefer telenovelas to the never-ending daily soaps because they've got one couple in the center and a guaranteed happy end is in sight.

Can't think of anything else to post now. Oh, wait, I wanted to write about the new season of Germany's Next Topmodel. Very short version of that post: I hate Tessa and my prediction for the winner (or in other words, the girl I want to win at the moment) is Marie.

Music awards and some random stuff

Just some random stuff:

Wanted to post my thoughts on the Grammy Awards even though it's been a couple of weeks now. Anyway: Coldplay totally deserved to win song of the year (or was it record of the year? The categories are kind of confusing with song, record, and album) for Viva la Vida because that song manages to make you smile even if you've been crying 5 minutes before. And of course because Coldplay rock anyway. Can't understand why they didn't win anything at the Brit Awards this week. But back to the Grammys. Jonas Brothers sucked even more than I expected. Katy Perry can't sing, especially not when she's jumping around at the same time. The performances I enjoyed were Justin Timberlake with Al Green, Neil Diamond, Radiohead, Kanye West & Estelle and the Motown medley by some old and some young guys.

Speaking of the Brit Awards, they were not shown on German TV so I only read about them - and watched Kings of Leon play Use somebody on YouTube. They rock, too. And Duffy deserved to win.

Tonight, the German music award show Echo took place (and is still going on on the telly behind me). Don't think anything of interest happened. Oh no, wait, Razorlight performed Wire to Wire which I loved.

Will tape the Oscars tomorrow night. Hugh Jackman, yay!

What else? It's still very cold and snowy here. I still haven't taken my car to a place where the electronics problems might be fixed. I still haven't planned any vacation for this year and I still haven't bought any boots or ski pants for the weekend in the snow I'm supposed to go on in mid-March with my co-workers although I so don't feel like it. Argh.

More on Bale

I guess I was the last person to talk about the Bale incident. Apparently, it made huge waves on February 3. So much so that it was even featured on one of the websites in my links section, Mashable. I find that kind of strange cos Mashable normally deals with new mobile apps or online music services or social media in general.

They call Bale's rant a "social media going mainstream" event. Sorry, but I don't get it. What does Bale's meltdown have to do with social media? The audio file was first posted on gossip site TMZ, not by a blogger or facebook user or something similar. I guess what Mashable means is that people talked about it very much using social media such as Twitter. I still find it strange.

A day later, Mashable asked the same questions that came to my mind in the entry I posted yesterday, i.e., was it all a publicity stunt? I still believe it wasn't because this is Christian Bale we're talking about. He's always been a very private person who hardly ever attends awards shows or parties and still hasn't officially released the name of his daughter. Since he became part of the new Batman franchise, he's become a much bigger name than before and has been seen more at movie biz events (at least that's my impression). But I still won't believe that he would have agreed to letting that tape be used to promote Terminator 4 because it really puts him in a VERY bad light. Yes, there are those that say even bad press is good press, but Bale really doesn't need that. He's probably in a better position as far as being able to chose his film projects goes than ever before. And as I said, he's not someone who enjoys the limelight.

What might be possible (as I mentioned yesterday) is that the studio couldn't stop the tape from being put online and forced him to apologize. The standard way would probably be an official statement, but maybe making him call in on a radio station is version 2.0 of that. Hm. I'm not sure, but here, too, I like to believe that Bale wouldn't be part of such a manipulation.

I guess I still care more about him than I thought. But it's not just that, it's also that I don't like to be manipulated by the media and that I'm curious to find out the truth behind stories - which is hard because I'm just a normal person with hardly more knowledge about what really goes on behind the scenes of the media businees than most people.

How often can you say the f-word in 4 minutes?

Very often, apparently. So, what am I talking about? Christian Bale totally freaking out on the set of Terminator 4 a.k.a. Terminator: Salvation back in July. One report of the original incident here. I think what happened was that the director of photography walked through the background of a scene they were just shooting and Christian didn’t like that at all, to say the least.

Now, why does this matter more than half a year later? Because now the audio to go with Christian’s rant has become available. It goes on for more than FOUR MINUTES. And as I said, the f-word is in it probably 100 times, if not 1000. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been a long-time fan of Christian’s and am not surprised or shocked because he is known to be very intense. What I find interesting is his accent, which now seems to be a mixture of English and American. Okay, so everybody is appalled by Christian’s behaviour and the incident was even reported on German TV (Exklusiv on RTL). Whatever. Let’s move on to the good sides of the story:

The remix. I find it hilarious and couldn’t stop laughing when I heard it.

The mash-up: Maybe even funnier. It mashes the trailer for Disney musical Newsies (the first film I saw Christian in back in 1992– awww, so cute!) with bits of the remixed meltdown. Simply amazing.

His apology: He actually called in on an L.A. radio show himself and tried to explain everything. Wow. I mean, he could have just made his agent release a statement or something similar. But no, not him. As I said, he’s intense and passionate and real because he’s not perfect and makes mistakes like everybody else. Okay, if I was more cynical than I am I could say this was just a way to promote the Terminator movie because he does say how great it turned out and so on. Or I could say he was forced by the studio to apologize in public. But I’m not that cynical (yet) and I do want to give him the benefit of the doubt and I like to believe that he is genuine. I'm not sure I'd want to run into him on a bad day cos I believe he can be a little scary, but I continue to see him as a good guy deep down. Yup. And his explanation that they were filming a difficult scene where he was trying to portray a certain craziness does make sense. End of my praise of the wonderfulness that in my eyes is CB. : )

Okay, have to add something: there's another clip which I don't find very funny, to be honest (most of all because I don't know who Bill O'Reilly is) but if you scroll down to the comments, you'll find someone saying "Christian Bale has nothing on Klaus Kinski." with a link to a YouTube clip of Klaus Kinski going off against director Werner Herzog back in the 70s (?). Oh boy, it's a small world. Here's why: just yesterday in the office, my boss brought that up. I can't remember at all in what context, but he started walking from his office to his co-worker's office (with my room being in the middle between the 2) and he was talking about crazy Klaus Kinski freaking out on sets and not answering questions on talk shows etc. I think there's a whole documentary feature about Herzog's and Kinski's difficult times on the set of a film called Aguirre. So when my boss brought this up, what came to my mind was of course that CB has also worked with Werner Herzog - on a film called Rescue Dawn. I haven't seen it and it's just been released on DVD here I think. Hm. Small world, isn't it? Everything's connected. Sigh.

Gut kopiert ist halb gewonnen?

Sat.1 kopiert, Teil 1:
Klinik am Alex, eine neue Arztserie (immer Do, ca. 22:15), die sich munter bei Grey's Anatomy bedient.

Beweisstück A: Im Mittelpunkt steht eine junge Assistenzärztin, die in einer neuen Klinik anfängt und Ellen Pompeo ähnlich sieht. Sie hat zwar nicht gleich mit ihrem Chef geschlafen, aber zwischen ihr und Dr. Stephan Roth (naja, mit Patrick Dempsey kann Andreas Brucker nicht mithalten) gibt es von Anfang an ne gewisse Spannung.

Beweisstück B: die Verwendung von Snow Patrol Songs. Während es bei Grey's Anatomy Chasing Cars war, beginnt Klinik am Alex mit Shut your eyes und hat als Titellied Crack the Shutters. TOTAL subtil. Die Instrumentalmusik erinnerte mich außerdem stellenweise stark an Emergency Room.

Beweisstück C: neben der Hauptfigur erinnern auch diverse andere Charaktere an das US-Vorbild, z.B. die ehrgeizige Exotin (nicht mit asiatischen wie Cristina, sondern Deutsch-Türkin) oder die fiese Chefin (Dr. Bailey bzw. Prof. Rehfeld) oder die mitfühlende Blondine, die sich rumschubsen lasst (Izzie bzw. Doris Manefeld).

Naja. Mal abwarten, ob ich das weiterhin gucken werde. Oder wie lang sich die Serie im Programm hält. Die Einschaltquoten der 1. Folge waren nicht berauschend. Und mit dem anderen US-Klon Dr. Molly und Karl (Abklatsch von Dr. House) landete Sat.1 auch nen Flop.

Sat.1 kopiert, Teil 2:
Oder auch: Sat.1 recycelt seine eigenen Shows. Früher hieß es Mann oh Mann, jetzt heißt es Mister Perfect - Der Männer-Test. Ist aber exakt dasselbe in grün. Die männlichen Kandidaten müssen einige Aufgaben meistern und sich dann von der Jury und dem 100% weiblichen Publikum bewerten lassen, bis ein Sieger übrigbleibt. Ich fand's irgendwie schon ganz amüsant, muss ich zugeben. Wie schon früher bei Mann oh Mann flogen selbstverliebte Schönlinge recht schnell raus, während sympathische "Normalos" bessere Chancen hatten. Charme siegt. Und das ist nicht schlecht.

Loved it, googled it, turns out it's the singer of Semisonic, a band I really liked at the end of 90s / in the early 00s (okay, that looks very strange ...) Hope it'll catch on here soon. Am Mittwoch hat die neue DSDS Staffel angefangen. Uah. Und Bohlen hat schon einen neuen Jury-Kollegen rausgeekelt (ging ja im Sommer, als die Castings stattfanden, schon durch die Presse). Aber wie ... Intoleranz hoch 10.

Also: Der neue Juror war Sänger und Schauspieler Max von Thun. Das Fass zum Überlaufen brachte laut der Sendung am Mittwoch ein Typ, der Umbrella von Rihanna mit Gitarre sang. Max fand's ganz gut und sagte, es war das 1. Mal, dass ihn Umbrella nicht genervt hat. Das konnte der liebe Dieter nun gar nicht verstehen, hat sich der Song doch millionenfach verkauft und war ein Riesenhit. Seufz. Bohlen findet also alles, was erfolgreich ist, automatisch toll und lässt es nicht durchgehen, dass jemand seine Meinung nicht teilt. Oh Mann. Davon, dass man über Geschmack streiten kann, hat er wohl noch nie was gehört. Es gibt genug Songs, die im Prinzip nicht schlecht sind, die einen dann aber wenn man sie stündlich im Radio hört, wirklich nerven. Ob das in diesem Fall bei Max von Thun so war, hat er nicht gesagt, aber Bohlens Einstellung ist so typisch. Für ihn zählt nur, was kommerziell erfolgreich ist und dagegen darf man dann nix sagen. Das kam bei ihm schon öfter durch und nervt mich echt. Muss ich also ... was weiß ich ... Jurassic Park oder Armageddon oder irgendeinen anderen erfolgreichen Film unbedingt gut finden? So ein Quatsch! Ich darf doch wohl ne andere Meinung haben. Muss ja nicht bedeuten, dass der Film oder Song schlecht gemacht ist, aber das garantiert ja nicht, dass er mir gefällt.

Irgendwie ist das so logisch, dass ich gar nicht weiß, wie ich's überhaupt erklären soll oder wieso Bohlen das nicht checkt. Genauso nervt, dass er Kandidaten sofort unterbricht, wenn sie ein Lied singen, das er nicht kennt. Er soll doch die Stimme beurteilen und nicht die Imitation des Originals.

Egal, jedenfalls ist jetzt so ein Plattenfirma-Typ (u.a. Manager des vor-vorherigen Gewinners Mark Medlock) der Neue in der Jury. Wer weiß, ob der "Umbrella" Vorfall wirklich der Grund war oder ob Bohlen von Thun einfach nicht leiden konnte. Argh.

Haven't made a list of new songs I like in a while. Guess now that I've got an iPod (only a Shuffle and I haven't really used it yet) I could call this "What's on my iPod" ... well, anyway, here come my song recs (not all brand new but still current):

James Morrison & Nelly Furtado - Broken Strings: Lovely duet. His voice is like velvet at the beginning of the song. A bit similar to James Blunt but less whiney kitschy. Like the lyrics as well: "You can't play on broken strings, you can't feel anything that your heart don't want to feel". Ha, grammar! Should be "doesn't" of course. English is going down the drain.

Razorlight - Wire to wire: Can's say I recognized this as Razorlight despite their big success with the song America last year. But it's a great song. Slow, with piano and chant-like singing. And quite sad. Oh boy, I'm not sure I can talk about music in English in a way that makes much sense ... forgive me ...

Snow Patrol - Crack the shutters: Also known as Shut the crackers in my crazy little head ... hehe. I know that makes no sense, but my mind is weird like that. Anyway, it's a lovely song. On the radio this morning they said Gary Lightbody (singer) called the song Snow Patrol's most obvious love song or something like that. IMO their song Run was definitely also a love song, and Chasing Cars as well. Run has been covered by Leona Lewis now. Uah. Not as bad as Bleeding Love but she should just have let Snow Patrol alone.

Ne-Yo - Miss Independent: I'm not a big urban fan, but I like this one, as well as Jordin Sparks' Tattoo and Jennifer Hudson's Spotlight.

Also, da ich mich ja in Bayern befinde, kann ich auch ne Temperatur beisteuern: das kälteste, was das Thermometer in meinem Auto bisher angezeigt hat, waren -16 Grad. Das war Donnerstag so zwischen 8 und halb 9, glaub ich Aber seit ein paar Tagen ist es wenigstens schön sonnig mit spektakulären Sonnenuntergängen.

Viel Schnee in NRW scheint zu stimmen, hab gestern von ner Freundin aus BO gehört, dass wegen der Schneemassen Chaos herrscht. Hm, kann mir irgendwie nicht so ganz vorstellen, wie das Chaos genau aussieht ... man wird halt wohl mit dem Auto schlecht voran kommen oder so. Hier geht's, es hat nur Anfang der Woche 10-15 cm geschneit geschneit und seitdem nicht mehr. Und meine Auto ist brav, toi toi toi.

Newest addiction: Gossip Girl

I have a new fave show: Gossip Girl. It's Josh Schwartz' new show (okay, not so new, it's already in its 2nd season ). Schwartz was the guy behind The O.C. which I enjoyed. Gossip Girl is similar in some ways, but very different in its setting - not Newport Beach or some other Californian place close to L.A., but the Upper East Side of New York City. Cool. And kinda makes it more grounded in reality for me.

Okay, that was a stub (as Wikipedia calls it), but I'm kinda in a hurry - season 3 of Prison Break starts in a couple of minutes. More on Gossip Girl might follow.

End of holiday

It's back to work for me tomorrow. Am nervous. And hope my car will start as it's freezing (-9 degrees Celsius right now). I un-dug it from 15 cm of snow yesterday.

Just wanted to report that I've seen 2 new films in the theatre over the holidays: Australia and Buddenbrooks.

Loved Australia from start to finish. Hugh Jackman is so good. Actually, the whole cast is, from villain David Wenham to Aboriginal boy Brandon Walters. Also loved the scenery and the epic-ness of it all - and the references to The Wizard of Oz which came as a surprise to me. Baz Luhrmann is one of my fave directors and I'll definitely get the DVD when it comes out.

The other film was a German one. Classic stuff, based on Thomas Mann's novel about a merchant family in Northern Germany in the 19th century. Can't say much about it. Good cast, nice costumes, but very depressing towards the end.

The next film I might go see is Twilight cos I've read all of the 4 vampire books by Stephenie Meyer. Am not too enthusiastic about them, though. Movie opens next week. We'll see.

I'm wondering why the navbar doesn't show in my blog although it's there in the page elements edit page. Strange.

Also, as always, my sitemeter seems to be gone. And I don't know what the edit button in the menu at the top is for. Whatever.

I have too many labels. Argh. So I'm wondering if I should have chosen a 3 column design instead cos at the moment the side menu goes down much further than the posts. Hm. We'll see ...

Update: I've gone through all my 150+ posts to edit / add / delete labels. Hopefully, things are a little mor structured now ...

I've also added the TV show list I had before. Some of the shows don't start before the week after next, but I guess I can add whatever I like and whenever I like ...

A couple of weeks ago, Pushing Daisies started airing in Germany and I was instantly hooked. The show has a unique look - very colourful and fairytale-like - which reminds me very much of Tim Burton's movies. It also has a very likeable cast and a wonderfully old-fashioned romance between the 2 main characters Ned and Chuck (no, they're not gay, Chuck is really called Charlotte).

It's on every Wednesday after Desperate Housewives and the ratings have been good so far - much to my surprise I must admit. I didn't think something so original and quirky would do well.

Then yesterday I read the news that Pushing Daisies will apparently be canceled after the 2nd season. What a pity. I thought it was doing well in the US, but apparently not. Hope the storylines can all be resolved properly (read: I want a happy end for Ned and Chuck!!). My German source for the news is here at DWDL. The ABC cancellations also affect Eli Stone, but that doesn't really bother me. I started watching it but didn't like it much - at least not enough to miss it when season 2 of Heroes started in the same timeslot on another channel here in Germany. I'm pretty sure Pro7, the German channel that airs Eli Stone, won't be too unhappy cos the ratings were pretty bad.

The 3rd show about to end is Dirty Sexy Money. That one hasn't even started airing in Germany yet so I can't say anything about it.

Edited to add: Argh, I just read that the final ep of Pushing Daisies ends with a cliffhanger (because the original plan had included 22 instead of only 13 eps). That is so not funny.

Snow

As every year, I'd like to report the first snow. It started yesterday in the late afternoon. And it's almost gone again. Did look quite pretty on my car this morning.

Snow and wind caused my sister's flight to Rome via Zurich to be delayed so she was stuck in Zurich for the night. I kept checking her flights on the airports' websites all evening. My own Friday night thriller. Strange way to spend an evening. Later I acted as her travel agent trying to rearrange her flight back. What a mess. But I guess all that was better than worrying and not knowing what was going on and not being able to help her - which would have been the case without my DSL. Cool.

So ... I ordered a new display yesterday. Got it for a great price. Also by Acer like my Aspire X3200. And I signed up for facebook on Friday. I found more people than I thought I would, mostly my old online friends from the Baleheads days. They're from the US, Canada, Spain and Denmark. Cool. Germans tend to use studiVZ instead I guess. Hm. We'll see who else might pop up again.

DSL update

My router and stuff arrived yesterday. When I openend the box in which the splitter was in, I saw screws and a drilling instruction and panicked a little thinking I'd have to rip my old phone socket out of the wall. Then I opened the router box and the manual and saw that I'd been wrong. Phew. Relief.

DSL is supposed to be available from Saturday on. I noticed that my old Ethernet cable is too short so I need to buy a new one. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything will go smoothly. Problem now is that I'm supposed to show up at my parents' place on Sunday. I can already picture myself tapping my fingers, sort of like "Hi, bye, I can't stay ..." hehe. And my sisters wants to go shopping with me on Saturday. Hm. We'll work something out.

Also, I can't decide which display to get. I'd like a 19" widescreen. But I'm not sure which one. My co-workers say Asus displays are good value for money. But there's an Acer model that's cheaper. Argh. I hate that. I can't tell where the differences are anyway.

Music recs

Good:
Maria Mena - All this time: Wonderful ballad with uplifting lyrics. Chorus: “All this time you’ve had it in you. You just sometimes need a push.” I can definitely relate to that. Somehow I hear “a little push”, but I think it’s just “push”. Whatevery. Lovely.

Polarkreis 18 – Allein, allein: Another song I can relate to (at least as far as the chorus goes). The verses are in English but I haven’t really paid attention to them yet. The chorus sounds like an anthem.

The Killers – Human: Heard it on British radio about 2 weeks ago. It’s now catching on here as well so it will probably be The Killers’ first song that gets some airplay in Germany. I guess they deserve it.

Sugarplum Fairy – Never thought I’d say that it’s alright: Came across it at work. Hadn’t heard of the band before at all. My friend Wikipedia told me they’re a band from Sweden. There was a pic and I thought, hm, funny, all these Swedish rock bands look so alike. And guess what, a couple of days later I heard on the radio that one of the guys in Sugarplum Fairy is actually the younger brother of one of the singers in Mando Diao. Ha. Guess that’s why his last name (Norén) seemed strangely familiar when I read it on Wikipedia. They sound pretty similar to Mando Diao, too, which might not be very original but it’s okay to me.

Nickelback – Gotta be somebody: Ha, how did they get in here? They normally annoy me cos all songs sound exactly the same. But this new one has got some good energy.

Jordin Sparks – One step at a time: Lovely (urban) pop song. Has not been released as a single here (yet), I think. Very positive vibe. Her other single Tattoo is good as well. Speaking of “urban pop” or whatever you wanna call it, I also like Ne-Yo’s new song Miss Independent. And Chris Brown isn’t too bad either. I’m becoming a planet chick. (That’s a reference to planet radio, a German radio station from Frankfurt that plays a lot of black music.) Still hate everything that’s too much hip hop / rap, such as Flo Rida or Lil Wayne or 50 Cent.

Linkin Park - Leave out all the rest: Sad lyrics. So good it makes me want to cry.

Bad:
Britney Spears – Womanizer: Listen to it once and it will stick in your head. And not in a good way. Makes me want to puke. Apparently the video is very sexy but I haven’t seen it yet and don’t really need to.

Alicia Keys & Jack White: Another way to die. This is the new Bond theme song. It sounds very much like former Bond theme songs. Couldn’t really care less. The title of the new Bond film sucks as well. At least the German title. It’s so bad that I can’t even remember it now. Oh yeah, my brain’s working excellently righ now ... and no, I didn’t have any alcohol yesterday ... Oh, and did I mention that I’m not into Daniel Craig AT ALL? Don’t understand what everybody sees in him. Okay, he’s got a good body. Pfff. Like that makes him attractive or a good actor.

Sarah Connor – I’ll kiss it away: Song for her kids or something. Lyrics are okay and I guess I could bear it in an unplugged version, but the synth beat they’ve put in it just ruins it.

Computer status update:
The mouse wheel is working now. Don't ask me why. Yippie! And I've managed to set up an internet connection. Still on dial-up so everything is as sloooooow as before. But still better than being offline. Right now I'm trying to update my antivirus software, and some other updates are in process in the background as well though I'm not sure for what. Hm. I don't like that my comp does things I haven't told him to do. Must look into the settings to stop that.

Comp update

At the end of last week, the comp I wanted was available again so I ordered it immediately. Yay! Got it on Tuesday. It's an Acer Aspire X3200. It's small and black and shiny and pretty. And fast and quiet. I do have one problem, though: the scroll wheel on the mouse won't work. Co-worker says it must be a driver problem. Will try to solve it on the weekend. Haven't found any solution in any online forums yet. Very annoying.

The comp has got Windows Vista Home Premium. Looks okay though the explorer takes a bit getting used to. Am loving that it comes with a couple of games that XP didn't have, such as Mahjongg and Chess. Oh yeah, the games, that's what makes a good OS ... I'm such a girl.

Still don't have DSL or any other internet connection at home at the moment.

Other things: it's very cold. Must get my coat from the attic on the weekend. Brrrrr.

Sorry for the lack of update. Have just been too busy and tired and my computer at home almost completely refused to work last weekend.

Been meaning to post my opinion on a couple of new songs but all I've been doing was updating my "TV shows I currently watch" list.

Blah. Autumn's here. Weather's cold. Heating only works in living-room and bathroom. Damn.

Have a big to-do list for the weekend consisting of such exciting things as laundry and vacuuming etc. Great.

One interesting thing: have free tickets to a preview of Burn After Reading for next Monday. Yay. George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Should be good.

Recap of my week off

Monday: Ikea. Didn't buy much and had a major headache in the afternoon.

Tuesday: Some shopping and a movie. Bought a pair of jeans and a purple v-neck sweater, both from Tom Tailor. Saw Mamma Mia! and liked it a lot. Meryl Streep has a great voice. IMO she sounds a bit like Cher (which normally would be bad because I don't like Cher, but here it worked). The men's attempts at singing were very cute. Never liked Amanda Seyfried in Veronica Mars but here she's really good.

Wednesday: Watched the Olympics. Did some laundry.

Thursday: Bought the Mamma Mia! soundtrack and saw The Dark Knight. Hm. What can I say? It was veeery looooong but Christian Bale looked good. I wasn't blown away. I don't know.

Friday: more Olympics, sadly not with a medal for my fave guy, the German pole-vault athlete Danny Ecker. Some grocery shopping and cooking. Never bought so many fresh vegetables before. Love love love the smell of limes (which are fruit, not vegetables, but anyway ...) Girls' night in with 2 friends.

Edit: I've thought some more about Batman / The Dark Knight: I love Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. They both have the best lines (in both parts, i.e. Batman Begins and TDK). I love the score (also in both films). I miss the Wayne mansion. I didn't like Maggie Gyllenhaal much. Don't know why. I almost wanted Katie Holmes back. Heath Ledger really is excellent as the Joker.

Okay, this next part might contain spoilers so you've been warned:
The kiss between Bruce and Rachel was lame. Bruce kept one hand in his pocket. I mean, hello?? You're kissing the love of your life, can't you be a bit more passionate??
I kept waiting for Harvey Dent to go bad. I kind of remembered it from the old Batman movies, I think, but I wasn't sure.
It felt a little bit to me like they had put too much story into one film. I don't really know how to explain this. There was just so much, the bad guy from Hongkong (Lao or whatever), the Joker, Dent, it just went on and on. I guess this should be a good thing, but for me it was just a little bit too much instead of focusing on one thing.

Haven't recommended any new songs for a while. Might have mentioned We Cry by The Script sometime. Now I've heard their 2nd single The Man Who Can't Be Moved and that's excellent as well. They're an Irish trio but don't sound Irish to me. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just that their R'n'B-ish style doesn't sound like any other Irish artist I know. Went straight to an online record store but guess what, their album isn't out yet. Grrr. So I have to wait to Sept 5 or something.

Christian Bale

Ich wollte eigentlich neulich schon was zu ihm schreiben, und zwar, dass ich ihn mal wieder "wiederentdeckt" hab, da ich endlich mal meine 3:10 to Yuma DVD angeschaut hab. Ich mag ja eh Western und der Film ist echt super. Er und Russell Crowe spielen toll und das Psycho-Duell ist wirklich spannend.

Außerdem kommt bald der neuen Batman-Film The Dark Knight in die Kinos, worauf ich mich auch freue. Ich muss unbedingt vorher noch mal Batman Begins anschauen. In Amerika ist er ja letztes Wochenende sehr erfolgreich gestartet. Aber was muss ich da gestern lesen? Christian Bale soll seine Mutter und eine seiner Schwestern in einem Hotel angegriffen haben. Pfff. Glaub ich überhaupt nicht. Ich verfolge seine Karriere seit 15 Jahren und es gab noch nie irgendwas, dass auf Gewaltätigkeit hindeuten würde bei ihm. Klar, er ist ziemlich extrem, was die Rollenvorbereitung angeht bzw. stürzt sich immer ziemlich intensiv in seine Projekte, aber sowas ... nee! Außerdem ist er eh schon als Teenager von seiner Mutter weggezogen zu seinem Vater nach Amerika und hatte angeblich gar nicht viel Kontakt zu seiner Mutter in England in den ganzen Jahren. Vielleicht ging es um's Geld, jetzt, wo er endlich mal größere Filme macht, bei denen er sicher gut verdient. Wäre ja nicht das erste Mal, dass Angehörige von Prominenten mit abstrusen Anschuldigungen ankommen. Ach, keine Ahnung, ich spekulier nur wild rum, aber ich kann auf jeden Fall nicht glauben, dass er auf seine Familie losgegangen sein soll.

Ich wünschte mir nur, es gäbe mal einen Batman-Start, der nicht von irgendwas überschattet wird. Als damals Batman Begins rauskam, hat sich ja die Presse nur für Katie Holmes und Tom Cruise interessiert. Und diesmal wird sehr viel über Heath Ledger geredet, ist klar, aber das mit den Anschuldigungen gegen Bale hätte echt nicht noch sein müssen.

Grrrr.

English summary: Christian Bale who I've just become interested again, is supposed to have assaulted his mom and one of his sisters in a London hotel. I don't believe it for a minute. ButI'm very much looking forward to The Dark Knight which comes out in Germany in August.

I've started reading the first book of the Twilight series that I mentioned recently and I love it. It's got 500 pages and I'm already on page 420 or something like that (even though I wasn't home most nights this week). I'm reading it in German, but I think I'll have to get it in the English original for myself soon.

Vampires

While I'm still in the middle of reading the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (takes me twice as long as it normally would cos I read every volume in English first and then again in German), a co-worker told me about another series of novels she loves very much: the so-called Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer. I think there are 3 parts available so far. The protagonist is a vampire. Hm. She said she wasn't too keen on that when she heard about it from a friend but now she can't put the books down. Like her, I'm not into vampires, but a good love story is always something I enjoy so I might borrow the first novel from her and see what it's like.

Speaking of vampires, I've started watching Moonlight now (or in other words, it has started airing in Germany now). That's a TV drama series about vampires. There's only 1 season cos it didn't get picked up but I'll watch it anyway while it lasts. I like the actor in the main part, Alex O'Loughlin. Don't think I've seen him before, but he's cute. I was looking forward to seeing Jason Dohring from Veronica Mars again in that show, but unfortunately he hasn't been doing much in the first 3 episodes.

Rock im Park

Tada, mit fast ein-monatiger Verspätung hier meine Kurzzusammenfassung vom 1. Festivaltag.

Kid Rock: Amüsant, mehr nicht.
Fratellis: klingen wie Oasis mit mehr Geschrammel. 2 Lieder kannte ich. Gesehen hab ich eigentlich nix, weil kein Interesse und zu weit von der Bühne entfernt.
Jimmy Eat World: super, aber leider war der Bass zu laut, fand ich, so dass man den Sänger nicht gut genug gehört hat.
Tote Hosen: gut, zumindest das, was ich gesehen hab, was aber nur ca. ne Viertelstunde war.

Schlange am Eingang und Gedränge allgemein: weniger schlimm als erwartet.
Bierkonsum: zu viel – aber nicht von mir, ein 0,4 Becher hat gereicht, schon weil die Klos total widerlich sind. Die ganzen Leute, die nicht mehr mitkriegen, wo sie hintorkeln oder die dich ungebetenerweise umarmen oder anrempeln, brauch ich echt net.
Wetter: hat gehalten, trotz Regenwolken. Temperatur fand ich optimal, nicht zu heiß oder zu kühl.
Verpflegung: teuer, aber gute Auswahl an Essen und Getränken.
Organisation allgemein: scheint alles gut zu sein.

Zum Sonntag vielleicht später mehr.

P.S.: Stockholm war toll. Wetter war schön, aber ca. 10 Grad kühler als hier (was mich nicht sonderlich gestört hat). Auch hierzu später mehr. Hab ca. 250 Fotos gemacht.

Okay, so obviously I survived Rock im Park, my first rock festival from June 6th to 8th. (Can't bring myself to call it RiP as everybody seems to be doing. They don't think of gravestones when they do that apparently.) I actually wrote a longish post about it but it's in my computer at home and I'm at work right now and forgot to put the file on my USB stick. The weather and the sound were both very mixed. As I said, longer post to come but probably not this month.

Reason: I'll be on vacation next week. Yay! Going to Stockholm with my sister.

Soccer EM 2008: the German team sucks. The best thing about our 1-0 win over Austria was Angie. Am too tired to explain that now. Tomorrow we'll have a BBQ on the roof terrace of our office building and then watch the Germany-Portugal game. We'll see how that goes. I'm not too optimistic. NL definitely looks like they'll win the whole thing.

Ha, boss just called saying I should go home now. Pfff. But I'll be a good girl and listen to him, hehe. Just this once. LOL. Nah, I'm just kidding ... anyway .... I'm off!

The past weeks have been a little bit crazy so I haven’t been at the computer much.

So what's been going on:
I had a car accident 2 weeks ago. And it was my fault, at least according to the police. Nobody was injured and the damage my car suffered isn’t big, but still it was no fun and of course the result was that I had a major cry fest that night alone in my apartment. Not pretty. The reason behind it wasn’t really the accident, but it kinda triggered my breakdown. I couldn’t stop crying for hours and my eyes looked completely puffy the next day. Oh boy. And don't ask me to explain why I actually cried because it sounds ridiculous even to myself. Whatever.

I’ve been out more than usual, thanks to a girl from the office that I get along with quite well. We went to a beergarden last Friday and to a cultural event in town called Blaue Nacht (blue night) on Saturday which really wasn’t that cultural. It was more pushing and shoving yourself through the crowds and look at some video/color/light projections in the market square and onto the castle on a hill above town – that was pretty cool.

Coming up is my first rock festival, Rock im Park. We’re all going, i.e. all my co-workers have tickets, too. I want to see Jimmy Eat World tomorrow and Gavin DeGraw, Stereophonics and Manic Street Preachers on Sunday. Oh, and a new guy from Australia called Pete Murray. Never heard of him before. I’m not too keen on any of the bigger/heavier acts such as Motorhead or Rage against the Machine or Kid Rock but I guess Metallica Sunday night is a must – although Germany’s first match at the Euro 2008 soccer championship will be going on at the same time. Dilemma.

Note to self: post something about Go Home Productions and mash-ups in general soon.

A couple of new things I'd recommend:

Duffy - Rockferry (album). Although she might be getting a lot of Amy Winehouse comparisons, she's nothing like her. Okay, not quite true. They're both in their 20s and from Britain and have unique voices. But whereas Amy's a mess, Duffy isn't. Also, you shouldn't judge her by the single Mercy alone because for me, the rest of the album sounds completely different, which is good cos I'm not a big fan of Mercy as a song. The first 2 songs on the album (the title track and Warwick Avenue) are much better IMO. Beautiful and dreamy, with a 60s touch. Reminds me of Petula Clark's Downtown somehow. Just lovely.

Sara Bareilles - Love Song: She sounds like Sheryl Crow with a bit more piano or a more cheerful version of Aimee Mann. Nice catchy unannoying song.

What else? Have I ever mentioned that May is my favourite month? At least for now, hehe. The weather's been wonderful for more than a week. Clear blue sky, sun, and the trees are a bright green. And not too hot yet. Yeeha. : )

Hair

Been to the hairdresser on Saturday. Apparently, the definition of "chin-length" is up for discussion ... so my hair is now shorter than I wanted it to be. Strange thing is, while I'm not too happy with the result, the response of my co-workers was all very positive. Huh. Go figure.

Normally people (especially men) don't even notice when I get my hair cut, but this time, really almost everybody said something to me. One of "my guys" said it made me look younger. I'm sure he meant it in a nice way ... BUT I DON'T WANT TO LOOK YOUNGER! The girl I went out with for coffee on Sunday (she also works here) almost didn't believe me when I said I was 32. Argh. My typical dilemma.

Germany's Next Topmodel

Okay, this is going to be a rant about Germany's Next Topmodel and therefore it's gotta be in German:

Also: die 3. Staffel von Germany’s Next Topmodel. Bin total genervt von einigen Kandidatinnen. Unangefochten auf Platz 1 auf meiner Hass-Skala: Gisele. Brasilianerin aus Norddeutschland (Nähe von Braunschweig oder so). Hat eine unerträgliche Stimme und kommt leider ständig zu Wort. Benutzt Worte wie „tragödisch“. Hm, ja, is klar, das zeugt eindeutig von hoher Intelligenz. Wie Fiona in der vorherigen Staffel fühlt sie sich von den anderen Kandidatinnen missverstanden und ungeliebt. Aber wenigstens hat Fiona nicht Photoshootings abgebrochen, weil sie sich gerade „nicht danach fühlte“ oder ähnliches.

Der Abschuss war in der Folge am Donnerstag folgendes: es gab in ziemlicher Kälte an einem Strand in der Nähe von New York ein Unterwäsche-Shooting mit 3 männlichen Models, die reihum mit den Mädels posierten. Es stellte sich raus, dass einer der Männer (ich glaub, er hieß Björn) der Freund eines Mädels war, das bereits ausgeschieden war. Weil diese Taina nicht nett zu unserer lieben Gisele gewesen war, wollte sie sich dadurch rächen, dass sie besonders heiß mit Björn posierte und rumflirtete, was sie auch lauthals verkündete, womit sie sich verständlicherweise noch beliebter bei den anderen Kandidatinnen machte. Björn war aber nicht an der Reihe, mit ihr Fotos zu machen und wollte auch nicht. Sie schleifte ihn aber trotzdem mit an den Strand und bezeichnete ihn vor Heidi Klum als unprofessionell, glaub ich. Björn war leider zu höflich und erzählte nicht die ganze Story (dass Gisele nur seine Freundin eifersüchtig machen wollte und so). Geweigert hat er sich aber schon. Also machte Gisele dann das Shooting mit einem von den anderen Kerlen (den ich sowieso viel schicker fand), den sie vorher keines Blickes gewürdigt hatte. Plötzlich wurde sie aber total scharf auf ihn und küsste ihn sogar und erzählte hinterher, dass ihr beim Shooting ganz „schwitzig“ geworden war usw. Er schien auch auf sie abzufahren. Und die naive Heidi fand es auch noch süß, wie gut die beiden sich verstanden. Ich kotz. Und vorher hatte Gisele immer steif und fest versichert, schauspielern sei ja so gar nicht ihr Ding … haha, dass ich nicht lache.

Was noch: es gibt 2 „Busenfreundinnen“ namens Sarah und Gina-Lisa, die mich auch ziemlich nerven. Sie nennen sich gegenseitig „Schatz“ und sagen sich dauernd, wie toll sie sich finden. Jetzt soll nur eine von ihnen weiterkommen und es gab ein Riesendrama am Ende der letzten Sendung. Anstatt die Jury anzuhören, haben die beiden untereinander rumdiskutiert. Sarah will nämlich auch gehen, wenn Gina-Lisa ausscheidet. Gina-Lisa findet aber, sie sollte dann für sie beide weiterkämpfen. Whatever. Shut up already, kann ich da nur sagen. Die Staffel gewinnen wird eh keine der beiden, wenn man mich fragt.

Das bringt mich zu den Kandidatinnen, die ich gut finde (ja, solche gibt’s tatsächlich auch): Also erstens meine ich, es sollte endlich mal ne Brünette gewinnen. In der 1. Staffel war es ja die blonde Lena, in der 2. die rothaarige Barbara. Also ist jetzt ne Dunkelhaarige dran. Und da gibt’s auch einige, die sich ganz gut machen und schon einige Jobs bekommen haben (die Mädels gehen nämlich in dieser Staffel ziemlich oft zu richtigen Castings). Meine „Lieblings-Brünetten“ sind Vanessa und Janina. Die kommen sicher beide sehr weit und machen einen sympathischen Eindruck. Vanessa konnte schon ein Shooting für eine Kampagne für die Taschen-Marke Bree machen (bei dem ich ihre Outfits allerdings schrecklich fand) und Janina hat einen Schuh-Werbespot für C&A gedreht und mehrere Laufsteg-Jobs bekommen. Außerdem mag ich noch Wanda und Raquel, weil sie auch natürlich und normal wirken.

... wow, no new post for more than a month, that's really bad. As always, work got the better of me. I could probably work 24/7 and still wouldn't get everything done. Argh. The "new guy" does help, though. And I get along with him quite well.

In my defense, I must say that I did write something new last Sunday but then my internet connection at home broke down before I could post it and I forgot to save the text to my USB stick so I can't post it from the office.

I know that part of what I wrote was a list of new songs I like. Hm, let me see if I can remember them ...

Melee - Built to last. Band's from California but they sound very British. Piano pop rock, similar to Coldplay and Keane, so that's right up my alley. My absolute favourite song at the moment. The chorus goes like this:

Newton Faulkner - Dream catch me. British guy with weird blonde rasta hair. Has a unique way a playing/plucking the guitar.

What else? Went to see Horton hears a Who! at the movies and enjoyed it very much. Very colourful and imaginative (is that a word??) and not just for kids. Cute. And I saw the trailer/preview for Made of Honor (in Germany it will be called Verliebt in die Braut, which means "In love with the bride"), which is Patrick Dempsey's new romantic comedy. It comes out in May. Can't wait. Love the McDreamy : )

FRIDAY!! Yay!!

Can you believe it? I'm in a very good mood today. Part of the reason is that I've been listening to Virgin Radio from the UK today (I was actually trying to find a good Irish station, but none really worked on my Phonostar player. Then I wanted to listen to Kiss FM from the UK because I'm registered at Songpeople and the keep inviting me to surveys that include questions about Kiss where you don't have the option to click "don't know" .... anyways, I wanted to know what it's like but it wasn't available on Phonostar so I chose Virgin) - and I'm loving it - and so does my co-worker in the room next to me so we're now playing it loudly. Examples of excellent songs we heard during the last couple of hours:

- Amy MacDonald - Run
- Snow Patrol - Run

They also play a lot of new British stuff I'm not familiar with. Problem is, the website where it says at the top which song is playing won't load. Argh. Not good for curious people like me.

I've also been checking out Jon McLaughlin's MySpace page. He did a song in the movie Enchanted and performed it at the Oscars last Sunday. BTW, 3 out of the 5 nominated songs were from Enchanted, but none won. Bummer for Menken/Schwartz, but good for Glen Hansard (remember him from The Commitments? I think he had long hair back then.) & Marketa Irglova from the film Once which I'd love to see because it's set in Dublin but it's not playing in any of the movie theaters in town, much to my and my co-worker's dismay. Anyway, Jon McLaughlin seems good. Couldn't listen to all of his songs on the MySpace page yet cos my co-worker turned up the volume next door.

Oh wow, I'm so rambling ... but I guess that's a good thing cos a couple of days ago I wanted to post something much more .... I don't know ... depressing ... cos work is still so much stress and I have no energy left in me etc. etc. It sounds stupid even to me know cos as I said, I'm in a good mood right now. I like my co-workers and the casual atmosphere here in the office (okay, that sounds as if we're having orgies, right? Not what I meant, believe me ...) and the fact that I get to listen to lots of new music etc. But there are downsides. But as I said, I'm not in the mood now to talk about them.

A Fine Frenzy – Almost Lover: kinda like Soulmate by Natasha Bedingfield. Very quiet, slow and moving with sad lyrics. Love it.

Sugababes – Change: Pure pop with a nice melody. Sweet.

Foo Fighters – Road to ruin: This rocks. Great stuff.

Mika – Happy Ending: His other songs annoy me, but this one’s nice.

Gwen Stefani – Early winter: With her it’s the same as with Mika. Don’t usually like her at all, but this ballad is good.

Amy MacDonald - Mr Rock & Roll: Girl from Scotland. Haven’t heard her on German radio yet but hope I will soon. She says she was inspired by Travis. You might like her if you like KT Tunstall.

The bad:
Madonna – Candy Shop: Haven’t heard in Germany yet, but a Ukrainian station that I’ve been listening to this week plays it. Not good.

Sheryl Crow - Love is free: Her new single. Used to like her, but that song is lame.

The ugly:
Celine Dion – Alone: Cover version of the Heart song (you know, the 80s hard rock group with the Wilson sisters). I love the original but Celine just ruins it completely. I was in almost physical pain when my colleague played it.

Leon Jackson – When you believe: Cover version of the Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey duet they did for the animated film Prince of Egypt. I’m not sure if their duet was also called When you believe or if it was called Miracles or something like that. This boy Leon Jackson won The X-Factor TV show in England, apparently. Problem is, he can’t sing at all. Really awful.

P.S.: I’ve got a cold again and feel awful. Not good.

Our very own Knut

I don’t know if you've heard about the polar bear baby Knut that was raised by humans in one of the zoos of Berlin last year. Got loads of media attention, and not just in Germany, as far as I know.

Now the local zoo here in Nürnberg has a polar bear cub, too. It’s a girl and it doesn’t have a name yet. There were 2 bears who had babies but only one survived and the keepers have to feed it now because the mother bear Vera was a bit confused (She took the cub out of the “den” and dropped it a few times and didn’t take it back into the den.). The cub doesn’t have a name yet, but she is referred to in the press as Flocke (flake). She’s the cutest thing although she doesn’t do much beside sleep and drink yet. She can’t even crawl and only opened her eyes yesterday for the first time. And she makes the cutest noises in her sleep.

If you want to check her out, the zoo and the city of Nürnberg have set up a website that provides an image gallery etc.

I really hope the little bear will be okay. The zoo’s director says she might still get an infection and is not really safe before she’s 3 months old or something like that.

More TV and music babble

Prison Break Season 1 DVD box:
Have now watched discs 1-3 and the specials on disc 6. Am happy with the box, but there are still a few things I wish they had added:
- Audio commentary from Wentworth Miller. He’s the only actor not doing one, I think. Instead, you get the very monosyllabic Dominic Purcell on more than one episode.
- Outtakes. They were always the best thing about the ALIAS DVDs, mainly because Jennifer Garner was so different from her character Sydney (i.e. clumsy and girlish-giggly) and that was so much fun to watch.
- More deleted scenes. What I most would have loved to see is a longer version of the kiss in episode 19 because it’s edited very strangely in the episode itself.

Dinotopia:
Oh yes, I’m still very much obsessed with Wentworth Miller. So although I hate dinosaurs I watched Dinotopia on TV last night (both parts were shown back to back) because he was in it. What really confused me was that his brother (played by Tyron Leitso) had his German Prison Break voice (Gerrit Schmidt-Foss, who also dubs Leonardo DiCaprio) while Wentworth had Lex Luthor’s voice (from Smallville, done by Björn Schalla). So when the brothers were in a scene together I always thought it was Went’s character speaking when I heard the Michael Scofield voice. Anyway … I found the whole thing highly amusing. It was all such a fantasy land … the costumes alone made me laugh quite a bit. Oh boy … poor Wentworth … no chance of looking cool in a light green shirt or a beige pilot’s uniform … hehe. But it was interesting to see him in a different part than the one he plays on Prison Break, just for a change.

J.J., you've officially LOST me

Short version: I will from now on (we’re somewhere in season 3) not watch LOST anymore. Another channel will start airing new episodes of Without a Trace in the same timeslot so I’ve decided to watch that instead.

Long version: I’m really the most loyal viewer any TV person could ask for. If I start watching a show and I like it, I’ll hardly ever miss an episode. I’ll even keep watching if the quality of a show deteriorates. The first season of LOST blew me away. As a fan of J.J. Abrams’ show ALIAS I had high expectations and wasn’t disappointed. Loved the combination of the things going on on the island after the plane crash and the focus on the different characters by means of flashbacks to their lives before the crash. Loved most of the actors as well. Bought the DVD box. Then season 2 came along and I didn’t like it as much. Can’t even remember why exactly. Michael getting violent and in general the appearance of guns and the increasing violence on the show were certainly part of the reason.
Then there was a long break on German TV cos the ratings had gone down and the channel LOST is on probably didn’t really know what to do with the show. But eventually season 3 started and it all got even worse.

Here are some of the reasons why I don’t like the show anymore:

- I hate the character Ben (kind of the boss of The Others) or maybe it’s the actor. I just can’t bear to look at this guy. You might argue that he plays the villain or creepy guy very well and I can enjoy villains on other shows, but this one … no way.

- The backstories for the characters have stopped making sense because they don’t fit together with what we learned before about a character. Examples: I didn’t buy Jack being completely jealous of his ex-wife’s new boyfriend. I don’t really see how Kate could have been married to a cop. It’s like the writers are just pulling rabbits out of hats. Look, we’ve got another surprise for you viewers! Hahaha. Not funny. The last thing I saw (I was on the phone at the time so I don’t know all the details) was that Claire is Jack’s half-sister. Great.

- The “love triangle” has been drawn out for way too long. Sawyer is hot. Kate fancies him. But she still can’t leave Jack alone because she thinks he’s the better guy and she should be with a good guy and not bad boy Sawyer. Or whatever. Who cares. But unfortunately the show focuses too much on these 3 characters. Yes, they were in the center of it all from the beginning, but before (season 1) it all seemed much more balanced and I really cared for most characters. But when you just see them in the background somewhere it’s hard to keep an interest in them.

- Everything keeps getting weirder. Okay, there was a polar bear in the middle of the jungle in season 1 and I thought it was cool. On one of the last eps I saw, there was a cow and some kind of farm. in the middle of the jungle. I don't know. I'm not saying I want "monster of the week" episodes. I don't mind story arcs that go on for several eps, but on LOST it has simply become too much. You just never get any proper answers and it's frustrating.

Okay, enough reasons. Bottom line: I’ve stopped caring and I won’t spend another Monday night watching that crap.

Last week I was in a bookshop and saw Cecelia Ahern’s novel PS, I love you with a film poster cover showing Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler. I had heard of Ahern before – all her novels have been translated into German and are quite successful here, I think – but had never read anything by her. I had mainly stayed away from PS, I love you because I thought I’d be crying the whole time if I read it. (The story is that a young man dies of a brain tumor and has left his widow a letter and notes for the months to come.) I had no idea they had made a film adaptation and I like Swank and Butler but didn’t buy the book that day.

Then on New Year’s Eve I had dinner with a friend. When I was about to leave we went into her bedroom to the bookshelf for some reason and she showed me some of her books and PS, I love you (in the German translation) was one them. So I told her about the film version coming up and asked if I could borrow it. She said yes and I basically spent all of January 1 reading it. I really liked it and it wasn’t as sad as I’d expected. It’s set in Dublin, which I loved cos I’ve been there twice (and loved it) so some of the street names sounded familiar. While reading it, I tried to picture Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler as Holly and Gerry. Didn’t quite work. And I kept wondering who’d play Holly’s friends and family (who all play important parts in the story).

Anyway, I started to look forward to the film especially because of the location. Haven’t seen a film set in Dublin in a while. But what did I have to find out today when I picked up Filmtips (a free magazine that lists the local movie theatre programmes and has short texts about all the films in it)? The film is set in New York (City)!! Are they crazy or what?! It says ‘autumn in New York’ in the blurb about the film. Even better. The book starts in February or March. Not exactly autumn, I’d say. F***ing Hollywood. Why do they have to Americanize everything? As I mentioned before, Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler do not quite fit how I see Holly and Gerry. Holly sounds more like a petite blonde, not tough girl Hilary Swank. But maybe it could have worked. They do speak English in Dublin, you know. And I’m sure there are Irish or English or Scottish actors who could have played all the other parts (Gerard Butler is Scottish anyway). But transferring everything to New York? Totally different story. Not that I don’t like New York, but shooting this there with a mostly American cast just destroys every connection to the book except for the basic storyline. So guess who does not want to see this movie? Right. Still, I don’t regret reading the book, and I might buy the English version – but only if I find it with a ‘normal’ (i.e. not movie-related) cover.

New Year's Resolutions

Obvious topic for this new post ... okay, so here they are:

1. Stay in touch with the girls formerly known as the "Eurochat girls". We've known each other for years from a Christian Bale mailing list/Yahoo! Group and used to chat regularly Sundays at 5 p.m. But for some time now we haven't been in touch much for various reasons. I e-mailed the girls (well, 3 of them - 2 from Spain and 1 from Denmark who I've actually met in real life) for Christmas and got sweet replies. Loved that. So I really really want to keep this up and not just feel guilty for losing touch every Christmas. And there are also a few people from Germany who I need to write to again.

2. Work on the things that my bosses mentioned in the talk we had in December. I was pretty shocked that they know me that well and have noticed most of the little things I thought I could get away with. Such as the fact that I don't like talking on the phone too much and try to avoid it by writing an e-mail instead. *Sigh* Must work on that and other things. Won't be too easy cos the things are not just "things" you can learn but they are part of my personality. Does that make sense? Hm. Also, I must try to figure out where I want to be in 1-5 years. As far as I'm concerned, work could just go on like that. I don't have a goal in mind that I want to reach within a certain period of time. I don't really know where my strenghts lie. I'm pretty clueless and don't have a plan or some grand ambition. Dammit. Wow, this is getting pretty deep and depressing. Anyway ... NYR no. 2 basically is to get better at my job.

It's 11 p.m. and I'm tired. So that's the end of my short list ... for now, anyway.
